POSITION PURPOSE
AND OBJECTIVES
This position acts as a Prosecuting Attorney responsible
for legal matters related to criminal offenses, traffic offenses, juvenile
offenders care and treatment proceedings, and appeals. The Assistant County Attorney works with
defendants, victims, witnesses and Defense Attorneys pursuant to Kansas law.
This position is under the general direction of the Deputy County Attorney.
ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS
1. Interact with the public, victims, witnesses
and defendants to complete
investigations and to obtain information
related to legal proceedings.
2. Review and research law enforcement records
and reports, statutes,
court decisions and other legal documents
to prepare for court
proceedings.
3. Prepare legal documents, including offense
charges, search warrants,
and appeal briefs.
4. Represent the State at criminal and juvenile
trials, hearings and
other court related proceedings and present
oral and written
arguments to District Court, Court of
Appeals and Kansas Supreme Court.
5. Accurately access, input and retrieve
information from a computer.
6. Be on call at least once a month to assist
law enforcement agencies as
needed.
7. Respond to change productively and complete
other tasks as assigned.
GENERAL
QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
1. Knowledge of operation of computers and
dictation equipment.
2. Knowledge of WordPerfect, E-Mail, D.A.'s
Assistant, and Case Base software
programs.
3. Working knowledge of court proceedings and
legal document preparation.
EXPERIENCE
1. None required.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL
ABILITIES
1. Ability to sit for long periods of time.
2. Ability to access, input and retrieve
information from a computer.
3. Ability to accurately prepare and comprehend
complex legal documents.
4. Ability to communicate effectively with the
public.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
1. Juris doctorate.
2. License to practice law in Kansas.
SUPERVISORY
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Review of documents and work completed by
clerical support personnel.
WORKING
CONDITIONS
1. This position involves work in an inside
office environment with the need to
travel about the community in the course of daily work activities.
2. Stressful situations may occur when dealing
with the public, victims and
witnesses and as a result of the workload.
