Job Description:

POSITION PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES

 

Provides care and supervision for youth residents in a secure setting.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

1.  Maintains security of the Detention Center through resident counts, room

    searches and building security.

2.  Supervises the juveniles in detention.

3.  Observes behavior and communicates information to shift supervisor.

4.  Teaches and counsels juveniles on personal hygiene, table manners, care of

    clothing, discipline, health needs and interpersonal relationships.

5.  Prepares and maintains confidential records and reports.

6.  Admits and releases residents to and from the Detention Center.

7.  Coordinates medical and court appointments.

8.  Assists the classroom teachers as para-professional.

9.  Performs minor maintenance and housekeeping duties.

10. Transports residents.

11. Participates in training and staff meetings.

12. Monitors youth resident visits.

13. Restrains youth residents when necessary, through physical or mechanical

    means.

14. Follows Juvenile Detention Center policy and procedure manual and

    directions of Supervisor.

15. Overtime as required.

16. Respond to change productively and complete other tasks as assigned.

 

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

                                   

EXPERIENCE

 

1.  One year of experience as a child care worker or house parent in a

    facility serving youth of the same age preferred.

 

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES

 

1.  Ability to stand or remain on feet for long periods of time.

2.  Ability to analyze situations and make sound judgements as needed in daily

    supervision of resident activities.

3.  Ability to read reports and other written material.

4.  Ability to seize, hold, grasp, turn or otherwise work with hands.

5.  Ability to lift, carry, push or pull 100 lbs. or more.

6.  Ability to physically control residents.

7.  Ability to hear directions.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING 

1.  High school diploma or equivalent.

2.  Three semester hours college level study in adolescent development, psychology or related subject.

3.  Must be at least 21 years of age.

4.  Must have a valid Kansas drivers license.

5.  Must meet all of the qualifications regarding facility staff for licensure according to the regulations of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES   

1.  Only those assigned on a day to day basis.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

1.  The essential functions of this position will be accomplished inside a

    Juvenile Detention facility where youth between the age of 10 and 18 will

    be residents.  The youth will be currently under charge for the commission of a criminal offense amounting to either a felony or misdemeanor.

2.  Highly stressful and physically threatening situations may occur in

    matters related to resident behavior, personnel matters, agency

    interactions, family of residents and citizens of the community.
