MECHANIC

 

Position Summary

 

            Under the supervision of the Shop Foreman, the Mechanic performs semi-skilled and skilled mechanical work on equipment and vehicles assigned to the Ellis County Public Works Department.  The employee in this position is responsible for performing the required maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment.

 

Examples of Work

 

·       Performs repairs on trucks, tractors, and all related construction equipment and vehicles;

·       Checks and services related equipment on a regular basis;

·       Disassembles defective equipment and replaces defective parts;

·       Cleans the shop area and stores tools;

·       Repairs engines, transmissions, drive lines, and brakes on vehicles;

·       Changes oil and filters;

·       Repairs and replaces tires;

·       Welds parts, equipment, and machinery when required;

·       Other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.

 

Position Requirements

 

Experience:  One to three years mechanic experience.  Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after three months in the position.

 

Education:  High school diploma or GED and some technical school in mechanics required.  A CDL is required.

 

Skills:  Good working knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.  The ability to weld and use welding tools.  The ability to operate all shop equipment.

 

Problem Solving:  Problem solving exists in this position.  Problems include keeping equipment operating properly and determining malfunctions in machinery.

 

Decision Making:  Decision making exists in this position.  Decisions include determining the most appropriate method of repair or replacement.

 

Accountability:  Employee does not have budgetary control and does not participate in the annual budget process.

 

Supervision:  Supervision is provided and job-related decisions are reviewed by the Shop Foreman.  Employee does not have supervisory responsibility over subordinate personnel.

 

Personal Relations:  Occasional contact with other county departments and the general public.

 

Working Conditions:  Manual labor is required.  Toxic fumes and weather conditions are factors in this position.
