Job Description:

THIS IS AN APPLICANT POOL.  MULTIPLE POSITIONS, PART TIME AND FULL TIME, WILL BE FILLED FROM THIS POOL.   

Job Objectives:

Performs routine work involving the security, supervision and training of juvenile or adult offenders in a 24-hour correctional or residential treatment facility setting.

Essential Job Functions:

Supervises, instructs, trains, monitors and sanctions juvenile and adult residents in detention or residential facilities in accordance with policies and procedures.  Maintains order, safety and security of the residents, staff and facility.  Follows and enforces daily routines to maintain cleanliness of the facility.  Leads recreational and educational activities.  Conduct searches of residents and facilities and participates in alcohol and drug testing of residents.  Prepares timely and acurate written documentation and reports of activities; reviews communications from prior shifts and supervisors necessary to carryout job duties.  Follows supervisory instructions in performance of job duties.

Engages in reviews, conversation or other liaison with community-based individuals to monitor activities of residents while in the community.

Assists in providing situational counseling for residents regarding their behavior in helping them cope with program requirements, crisis intervention or suicide prevention, application of physical force or restraints when appropriate; administers and documents first aid and medication provided to residents.

May initiate disciplinary action when residents violate rules; writes disciplinary reports and consequences and supervises the application of consequences, investigates incidents and conducts hearings.

May escort residents to and from school, court, visitation, meals and other activities; engages in liaison and other communication necessary to monitor activities of residents in community.

Inspects living areas to ensure doors, windows and other areas are secure to prevent unauthorized departure and to promote facility security.

Assists in the admission and release of residents.

Administers urinanalysis and breathalyzer tests.

Prepares and maintain records and reports; control as necessary resident monies and possessions.

Attends meetings and scheduled training.

May assist the counselor or case manager with resident job placement; assists resident in practicing interviews, completing application and other personnel-planned duties.

Knowledge of policies and procedures governing care of adult and juveniles in correctional settings.

Knowledge of physical and emotional needs and problems of adult and juvenile offenders.

Knowledge of health and safety practices in correctional adult residential settings.

Knowledge of methods and techniques of evaluating and reporting behavior problems.

Ability to communicate with troubled juveniles and adults.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with offenders, other staff members and the public.

Ability to interpret related regulations, laws, policies and procedures.

Ability to react quickly and calmly in an emergency.

Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.

Ability to provide instruction, both individually and in groups.

Ability to receive certification in first aid and physical restraint training.

Ability to make quick independent decisions in a fast-paced environment.

Ability to read and enter information accurately into the computer.

Ability to transport clients as needed.

Performs related work as required.

Job Standards:

Requirements:

  1. Be twenty-one years of age;
  2. Have a high school diploma or its equivalency;
  3. Valid State of Kansas Driver’s License and good driving record that meets the requirement of Sedgwick County Fleet Vehicle Operation and Usage Policy.  Personal vehicle for use when county vehicle is not available (employee reimbursement is provided by County).  Proof of liability insurance on personal vehicle;
  4. Must possess first aid, CPR and physical restraint certification or the ability to acquire within initial period of employment. 
  5. Pass legal background check, Child Abuse & Neglect Central Registry check, and pre-employment screen for alcohol and drugs.

Preferred:

  1. Some college with course work in criminal justice, psychology, sociology or related field; or,
  2. One year of successful work experience as a direct care worker in a facility serving youth ages 10-17.

Transcripts required for verification of education credits.

Testing/Screening Requested: Work involves use of Equipment: General Office Equipment, Two-Way Radio, and personal computer. 

Work Environment:

Work is performed indoors and outdoors in a corrections setting.  Management may change the facility assignment as needed to respond to changing conditions.  Will have exposure to hostile people.  Must be available to work varied days and shifts, including weekends and holidays. 

Must pass KBI background check and pre-employment urine drug screen.

Valid Kansas Drivers License Required.

Must meet Driver Qualification standards as set forth in Sedgwick County’s Fleet Vehicle Operation and Usage policy.
