PUBLIC SERVICES MAINTENANCE WORKER
(Public Works Department)
Duties of this
full-time position include performing a variety of labor and maintenance work. Other duties include operating a variety of
equipment for construction, repair, maintenance and replacement of City
streets, stormwater drainage and in the collection of refuse. This job requires heavy lifting, bending,
stooping and performing duties in all types of weather and, potentially, at all
times of the day and night. Candidate
must obtain a Class B CDL within 60 days of employment.
Candidates must
possess a high school diploma/acceptable equivalent and a valid driver’s
license with a safe driving record as determined by the employer.
The successful applicant must pass
post-offer, pre-employment drug/alcohol screens along with physical capacity
profile and background checks. Pay Range:
$11.37/hour - $15.38/hour.

GENERAL
OVERVIEW OF POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs a variety of unskilled or
semi-skilled maintenance work and operates a variety of equipment in the
construction, operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of City streets,
stormwater drainage and in the collection of refuse.

under the general guidance and direction of the Public Services Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Essential functions of
the job may include but are not limited to the following:
Inspects and/or repairs streets and
drainage systems at frequent intervals to insure that all aspects of the
systems are functioning properly.
Maintains a variety of records relating
to maintenance activity and job duties.
Determines locations of all utility
lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.
Responds to complaints about street,
stormwater and sanitation issues; evaluates the issues; explains findings to the
Public Works Supervisor.
Insures the proper maintenance of
equipment and tools by cleaning and checking after each use.
Drives trucks of various sizes and
weights in loading, hauling and unloading various equipment and material.
Performs routine inspection and
preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or repairs to the
Public Services Supervisor.
Performs all duties in conformance to
appropriate safety and security standards.
Performs required labor involved in
construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement
cutting, ditch digging, chip and seal activities, main and pipe repair, laying
and backfilling.
Cuts, fits, lays, repairs, and cleans street
and stormwater drainages.
Operates a variety of power
construction and maintenance equipment used in street, stormwater and
sanitation.
Collects refuse, recycled materials or
yard waste over a designated route, picking up sanitation containers and
depositing into a sanitation truck.
Makes special refuse collections as
assigned.
Maintains radio or other communications
with the office to receive or report variances to standard operations.
Observes surrounding conditions such as
citizens, equipment, property, etc. in order to assure that refuse is collected
in a safe manner.
Regulates traffic in hazardous
conditions in order to assure safety conditions for personnel and the general
public.
Helps unload sanitation truck at
landfill or burn pit.
NON-ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS
Attendance
at training, workshops and seminars.
Serves on various employee or other
committees as assigned.
Perform
other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of equipment, facilities,
materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair
of City infrastructure systems and confined space procedures.
Skill in operation of all listed tools and equipment.
Ability to work safely.
Ability to communicate effectively both
verbally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain
effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public;
understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Ability to perform at a satisfactory
level with limited supervision and/or assistance in job assignments.
EDUCATION AND
EXPERIENCE
Must
possess a valid driver’s license with a safe driving record as determined by
the employer.
Must
be able to obtain Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within sixty (60) days of
employment.

work environment and conditions described here are encountered in performing
