Job Objectives:
Responsible for providing Civil
Engineering expertise, guidance and technical assistance to Sedgwick County,
consultants and the public.
Essential Job Functions:
Roadway and highway engineering
design from site feasibility analysis and planning to final design services,
including administrative work in the field or office associated with the
design, development, investigation, construction and maintenance of Public
Works roads, structures and related facilities.
Assumes the role of Design
Engineer; prepares engineering plans, detailed working drawings, cost
estimates, and specifications for various Public Works projects from minor
maintenance up to large, complex multimillion dollar projects.
Assumes the role of Project
Manager; oversees various Public Works projects from initial conception through
construction; supervises the work of outside consultants, and the work of
survey, CAD and inspection personnel; coordinates the efforts of design,
construction and inspection services; prepares required contract specifications.
Assumes the role of
Construction Engineer; confers with contractors and vendors concerning plans,
specifications and the quality or work performed; reviews contractor's drawings
and approves all phases of construction; negotiates relocation of utilities for
construction; designs and directs construction modifications as field
requirements dictate.
Reviews subdivision plans
prepared by outside consultants to ensure compliance with KDOT and Sedgwick
County standards and special provisions; approves construction plans and
coordinates implementation of streets into Township or County infrastructure
system.
Managing and facilitating
engineering personnel in field surveying, inspection and computer aided design
(CAD) in order to obtain desired results.
Reviews technical reports and
engineering drawings for compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, KDOT and Sedgwick County
design specifications.
Prepares cost estimates and
appropriate design documents for special assessment projects.
Recommends methods of resolving
unusual and complex problems and improving materials and practices; interprets
applicable engineering and administrative directives, policies and standards.
Meets with interdepartmental
staff, outside engineer, officials and citizens to solve engineering and design
issues.
Employs Microsoft Office,
specialized modeling software and AutoCAD design software in preparation of
data compilation, engineering design and analysis.
Performs other related work as
required.
Job Standards:
Bachelor of Science in Civil
Engineering (BSCE) from an ABET accredited university.
Four years of professional
engineering experience or any equivalent combination of training and
experience.
Registration as a Licensed
Professional Engineer in the state of Kansas.
Valid Kansas Driver’s license.
Work Environment:
Office environment with some
field work required.
Knowledge of engineering
principles and practices applied in the planning, location and design of
engineering projects.
Knowledge of structural
analysis and design.
Knowledge of Microsoft Word,
Excel and AutoCAD civil design software.
Ability to establish and
maintain effective working relationships with other governments, consultants,
constructors and the general public.
Must
pass KBI background check and pre-employment urine drug screen.
Valid Kansas Driver’s License
Required. Must meet Driver Qualification
standards as set forth in Sedgwick County’s Fleet Vehicle Operation and Usage
policy.
