Job Description:

Job Objectives:

Maintains grounds and plants to ensure facilities meet botanical gardens standards. Performs grounds maintenance, lawn mowing, pruning, planting, and maintenance of equipment.

 

Essential Job Functions:

Participates in all respects to turf management including but not limited to: mowing grass by hand, power, and tractor mowers. Operates necessary equipment to trim and prune shrubs; pulls weeds as needed and maintains garden beds. Maintain and repair irrigation in all areas. Performs all maintenance and plant management in ponds and waterways. Completes maintenance to hardscape related items in the zoo including post-n-rope, edgings, timbers and rocks. Maintains walkways including removing litter, debris and snow. Maintains fencing, hot vines and hot grasses for animal containment and pest/vermin controls. Maintains and cleans work areas. Performs preventative maintenance on all aspects of horticulture areas throughout the zoo. Driving a Zoo vehicle as needed for parts runs and dump runs.

 

Job Standards:

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Valid State of Kansas Driver s License.

 

 

Testing/Screening Requested:

No testing beyond County requirements.

 

Equipment:

Mowers, edger, rakes, weed eater, pitchfork, shovel, lopper, pruning shears, hoses and tiller.

 

Work Environment:

Outdoors, shop, greenhouse, exposure to dust, weather and some chemicals.

Usual working days/hours:  20.0 hrs per week Location of work:  Zoo Grounds

 

Must pass KBI background check and pre-employment urine drug screen.

 

Valid Kansas Driver’s License Required.  Must meet Driver Qualification standards as set forth in Sedgwick County’s Fleet Vehicle Operation and Usage policy.
