Job Description:

The City of Newton is recruiting for a Traffic Control Technician position. This is a highly skilled and technical position involving the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals, signs and markings. The Traffic Control Technician develops optimal traffic signal timing patterns, troubleshoots signal malfunctions and takes corrective action. This individual is responsible for interpreting design plans and federal regulations, planning and implementing a wide range of assignments, and executing the planned work. This individual completes design and manufacture of traffic signs, maintains an inventory and performs periodic inspections of traffic control devices. The Traffic Control Technician leads a small work team in the performance of assigned duties. Supervision is provided and job related decisions are reviewed by the Street Services Supervisor.

Experience: Three years of traffic signal installation, repair and maintenance experience; Three years of pavement marking design/layout and application using conventional spray equipment and thermoplastic materials; Three years practical experience in the planning, design and maintenance of traffic control elements; Some field supervisory experience is desirable, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after twelve months in the position. Possession of a class B commercial driver's license with air brake and tank endorsement.

Education: High school diploma or GED. Advanced technical training in the principles of traffic control, traffic signal applications and related hardware; Technical training in the use of Adobe Illustrator graphic design software and related sign-making equipment; IMSA certification preferred.
