Job Objectives:
This position is part of a long-standing partnership
between Sedgwick County and Wichita State University. To be eligible for consideration, applicants
must be enrolled at Wichita State University and participate in the WSU Cooperative
Education Program. This position may
satisfy internship requirements for certain WSU degree programs. Potential semester projects include diverse
possibilities such as researching, developing and installing lobby exhibits and
retention schedules, or others that both benefit the public and provide a
substantial educational experience for the student.
Assist with the daily operations of the Courthouse
Records Center.
Assist customer departments in accessing records. Assist
with processing incoming records. Assist in processing records destructions.
Assist in applying proven archival methods and research skills to existing
projects to prepare for and engage in scanning and indexing. Assist preparing a
backlog of unprocessed County archival collections for access, including
processing, describing and preparing finding aids.
Essential Job Functions:
Shelve and retrieve materials for access. Update
database. Prepare shipments for offsite storage and for destruction. Respond to
questions from internal customers about procedures. Answer open records calls
from the public, referring to appropriate County (or other) agencies, or
referring to other staff members for response.
Job Standards:
Must be a currently enrolled at Wichita State University,
actively participating in the WSU Cooperative Education Program and enrolled in
a WSU degree program for which the educational experience would be relevant.
Must have a valid Kansas driver's license and meet County
standards for operating personal vehicles on County business.
Must clear both standard Kansas Bureau of Investigation
(KBI) criminal history background check and further criminal history background
checks conducted by Sedgwick County Sheriff.
Prior experience in Archives, warehouse environments or
managing records would be desirable, but is not required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies:
Demonstrate strong and positive interpersonal
communications skills.
Able to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally
and by email.
Able to use PCs and Windows applications productively,
including word processing (MS Word), spreadsheet (MS Excel), database
applications and scanning software.
Ability to research, understand, apply and communicate policies,
procedures and processes to internal customers and the public.
Able to reach, grasp and carry boxed records, bound
volumes and other objects.
Able to climb stairs and ladders.
Have physical dexterity and ocular capability for
recognizing, classifying, sorting and organizing objects by physical
characteristics, including but not limited to size, color, shade and texture;
bound volumes; boxed records, and microfilm.
Able to lift items each weighing up to 50-lbs. (averaging
about 30-lbs.), and do so intermittently along with other physical activities
(i.e., stretch wrapping and strapping palletized records, moving pallets with
pallet jack, operating freight lift, etc.) for periods of up to two hours at a
time.
Equipment:
Standard office equipment (i.e., telephone, computer,
printer, scanners, and multifunction printer/copier/scanner/fax units).
Standard warehouse apparatus and equipment, including
pallet jack, platform trucks, hand trucks, freight lift, stretch wrap and
cleaning apparatus.
Testing/Screening Requested:
Driver s license, KBI criminal history background check
and drug screen.
In addition to standard KBI background check, a more
extensive criminal history background check conducted by the Sedgwick County
Sheriff will be required.
Work Environment:
The primary work site will be the Courthouse Records
Center, a secure facility located on the basement mezzanine level of the County
Courthouse (525 N. Main), accessible only by stairs. DIO/IT-RMS staff members
travel routinely to other County buildings, both within the Courthouse campus
and beyond. Infrequent work trips to the Salt Mine commercial records storage
facility (located 650 feet underground in a working salt mine at Hutchinson,
KS) are rare but may be required. Most work will be performed indoors, but on
occasion shipments must be loaded or unloaded outdoors, sometimes in inclement
weather.
Usual working days/hours: Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm Flexible work hours
to be determined in cooperation with student around WSU classes, with an
average of 20 hours per week

This Position
does require some driving.
Must pass KBI background check and
pre-employment urine drug screen.
Valid
Kansas Driver’s License Required. Must
meet Driver Qualification standards as set forth in Sedgwick County’s Fleet
Vehicle Operation and Usage policy.
