
Sedgwick County
Sedgwick County is located in south central Kansas and is the second most populated county in the state. It encompasses an area of 1,008 square miles with a population of more than 480,000. There are 21 cities within Sedgwick County, and Wichita, the largest city in Kansas, is the Sedgwick County seat.
Sedgwick County is home to a number of industries, the most notable of which are aviation-related and have earned the community the title of "Air Capital of the World." Combined, Cessna, Beechcraft, and Bombardier Aerospace supply more than half of the world's general aviation and military aircraft. And, the Boeing Company produces two-thirds of the world's commercial airliners. Other industries located in Sedgwick County include Koch Industries, The Coleman Company, Vulcan Chemicals, Via Christi Regional Medical Center, and Wesley Medical Center. Since 1954, McConnell Air Force Base has been a vital part of the Wichita community. McConnell AFB is home to the 22nd Air Refueling Wing of the Air Mobility Command, the 931st Air Refueling Group of the Air Force Reserve and 184th Air Refueling Wing of the Kansas Air National Guard.
Sedgwick County is conveniently located in the center of the country where prices for food, entertainment and hotel rooms remain affordable. Major highways, including the Kansas Turnpike and Interstate I-35, link the community to other Midwestern cities, including Denver to the west, Kansas City to the northeast and Oklahoma City and Dallas to the southeast.
The community offers an exciting mix of history and culture, as well as the modern conveniences of shopping and entertainment. The 247-acre Sedgwick County Zoo opened in 1971 and has been ranked among the best zoos in the world. Displaying more than 2,500 animals of 436 species, it is the #1outdoor tourist attraction in the state of Kansas. Exploration Place, a science and discovery center, offers visitors of all ages an opportunity to “explore” nature, flight, human life and more! This beautiful facility built on the Arkansas River in downtown Wichita provides hours of entertainment!
And, new to Sedgwick County in 2010, the INTRUST Bank Arena is a 15,000-seat arena is a world-class sports and entertainment venue located in the heart of downtown Wichita. Performers have included Brad Paisley, The Eagles, Elton John and Billy Joel, Jon Bon Jovi, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Carrie Underwood, Aerosmith, Taylor Swift, Kid Rock, Trans Siberian Orchestra, Harlem Globetrotters, Oklahoma City Thunder, Wichita State University Shockers, Kansas State University Wildcats, Radio City Music Hall Rockettes, and many more. The main tenant of the INTRUST Bank Arena is the long-time local favorite Thunder Hockey Team.
Sedgwick County also offers “Museums on the River” for enjoyment. Old Cowtown Museum provides a glimpse into life in Wichita in the late 1800s. This living history museum helps showcase the daily life of farmers and tradesmen in the Midwest. The Kansas African American Museum offers an experience of the diverse contributions and history of people of the African diaspora. The museum revisits aspects of African American history from a national perspective past and present. The Mid-America All-Indian Center preserves and showcases the heritage of the Native American tribes of North America. Permanent and rotating exhibits of both traditional artifacts and contemporary art depict Native American cultures of both past and present. Also within walking distance are “Botanica,” providing beautiful botanical gardens to enjoy, and the Wichita Art Museum, the largest art museum in Kansas.
Higher learning opportunities are numerous with Wichita State University (15,000 enrollment), Friends University (2,800 enrollment), and Newman University (2,700 enrollment), WATC at the National Center for Aviation Training as well as several community colleges, technical colleges and distance learning programs in the area.

Sedgwick County’s Healthy Benefit Plan offers employees a way to stretch their benefit dollars.
Flexible Benefits. Employees have the opportunity to build personalized benefit plans from a menu of choices. Each year, eligible employees select the benefits that best meet their needs and those of their families.
Healthy Benefits offers Tax Advantages. Healthy Benefits may be purchased on a pretax basis without any federal, state or Social Security tax withheld. This allows for a substantial reduction in taxes.
Healthy Benefits offers Choices. Healthy Benefits offers employees choices in each of these categories:
• Medical Plan – employees may choose Preferred Plus of Kansas – Basic Plan. Plan is tiered into Single, 2-Person, and Family. Deductible and co-insurance apply.
• Prescription Drug Plan – employees may participate in the Preferred Plus of Kansas prescription drug plan administered by Medco Pharmacy, there is tiered co-pay.
• Dental Plan – employees participate in Delta Dental of Kansas. There are deductibles and coinsurance levels.
• Vision – employees participate in the Vision Service Program. Co-pay and coinsurance apply.
• Life Insurance – employees may participate in Advance Insurance plans; Basic Term Life up to $75,000, Accidental Death & Dismemberment up to $75,000, and Dependent Life up to $10,000 (not pre-tax).
• Flexible Spending Accounts – employees participate in Health Care and Dependent Care reimbursement accounts.
• Vacation Sell – employees can sell vacation accrual to purchase other benefits or may take as a cash lump sum.
RETIREMENT
Employees become members of either the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS), or the Kansas Police and Firemen’s Retirement System (KP&F).
KPERS Life – KPERS provides life insurance equal to 150% of a member’s annual salary.
KPERS Group Optional Life Insurance – employees may participate in term life insurance up to $250,000.
LEAVE and HOLIDAYS
Employees accrue between 12 and 24 days of vacation per year depending upon their length of service and approximately 8 hours of sick leave per month. Sedgwick County employees enjoy legal holidays as established by the Board of Sedgwick County Commissioners.
TUITION REIMBURSEMENT
Sedgwick County offers eligible employees a tuition reimbursement program.
TRAINING
Sedgwick County maintains a training catalog that offers coursework for several certificate programs. Employees may apply for available classes.
