El Dorado Fire Department

The El Dorado Fire Department would like to take this opportunity to provide you with information about the City of El Dorado, the El Dorado Fire Department and the position of Firefighter.

THE CITY OF EL DORADO

On September 12, 1871 the Butler County Probate Court granted a petition to incorporate the village of El Dorado into a city of the third class. Currently, El Dorado is a second class city and the county seat of Butler County, the largest county in Kansas.

With a population of approximately 12,000, El Dorado is about 120 miles west of the Kansas-Missouri border and about 65 miles north of the Kansas-Oklahoma border. The town is served by several highways and is accessed by two exits along the Kansas Turnpike. El Dorado is also only 20 miles from the largest city in Kansas, Wichita.

El Dorado has an average annual temperature of 56 degrees, low temperatures average 31 degrees in January and high temps. average 80 in July. Rainfall and snowfall average 30 inches and 15 inches respectively. The city is 1300 feet above sea level.

The City of El Dorado is governed by an elected mayor and four member city commission. They appoint a City Manager who handles the administrative functions of the city.

Educational services include five elementary schools, one middle school and high school. Butler County Community College is located at the southwest edge of El Dorado. There are also several day-care and pre-schools in town.

El Dorado has several civic organizations, social clubs, and churches. Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital provides a ninety bed, full service hospital.

The City of El Dorado maintains a city recreation department which provides organized recreation for all ages. There are eight city maintained family parks and El Dorado is the home of the El Dorado State Park and Reservoir, one of the largest state parks in Kansas.

El Dorado is an established city with its own industry and businesses which provide the majority of employment for its residents. It is a growing, yet quiet, community and lives up to its motto---“El Dorado, The fine art of living well.”

THE EL DORADO FIRE DEPARTMENT

In 1964 the El Dorado Police and El Dorado Fire Departments combined into one organization called the El Dorado Department of Public Safety. This combination called for a complete cross-training of each job. The Public Safety Concept served the El Dorado community well for over thirty years. In 1995 it was decided to revert back to separate police and fire departments and the El Dorado Fire Department was re-established on January 1, 1995.

Current authorized strength is 13 paid, full-time personnel supplemented by a 20 member volunteer force. Heading the department is the Fire Chief. He is assisted by three shift Captains.

The Fire Department operates on a 24/48 hour shift rotation. Fire Department personnel operate and maintain all fire fighting equipment, perform fire prevention duties, conduct public education programs, and respond to a variety of emergency and non-emergency incidents. These may include; fires, motor vehicle accidents, rescues, hazardous material events, medical emergencies and much more.

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent, Certification as FFI, EMT-B preferred (required within one year of hire)
Valid Kansas Drivers License
No Felony Convictions

All promotions are based on merit.

City benefits include KPERS (retirement),; optional health insurance plans to which the city pays approximately 70% of the premium; employees receive paid vacation and holidays, as well as sick leave. All equipment and uniforms are issued and firefighters are provided with an annual uniform allowance.

All new firefighters are hired on a probationary status. All conditions of the probation period must be met to continue employment.

Applications are always accepted but positions are filled on an “as needed” basis. Applicants must be willing and able to take a battery of tests which include physical agility, oral interview board, and psychological screening (post job offer). All qualified applicants will have their work history, financial history and personal character investigated.
