THE MISSION OF THE HUTCHINSON FIRE DEPARTMENT...

The Hutchinson Fire Department is a multi-missioned emergency agency serving the citizens of Hutchinson and Reno County Fire District #2 with a strong commitment to preventing loss of life and property from fire, accidents, and natural disasters.

LOCATION
The City of Hutchinson is in the center of Kansas and is the geographical center of the United States. Hutchinson has a population of 40,000. Combined with the citizens of Reno County Fire District #2 brings the population protected to 46,400. Geographically the protection district encompasses 105 square miles. The Hutchinson Fire Department provides Specialty Rescue and Hazardous Materials services to the remainder of Reno County’s seven volunteer fire departments and neighboring counties through mutual aid agreements. Hutchinson is 35 miles northwest of Wichita, the states largest city Hutchinson is home to the Kansas State Fair, the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center, the National Junior College Basketball Tournament, the 2003 Ladies Professional Golf Association Open, and in 2006, the PGA US Senior Open. Hutchinson has a stable tax base, excellent schools, and parks and recreation facilities are second to none in Kansas.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Hutchinson is served by seven fire stations and 93 career firefighters. The Hutchinson Fire Department provides structural, rural, and wildland firefighting services to the citizens of Hutchinson and Reno County Fire District #2. In addition, the department has both a Technical Rescue Team and Hazardous Materials Team. The Hutchinson Fire Department averages 3,200 calls per year.

Hutchinson is served by seven fire stations and 93 career firefighters. The Hutchinson Fire Department provides structural, rural, and wildland firefighting services to the citizens of Hutchinson and Reno County Fire District #2. In addition, the department has both a Technical Rescue Team and Hazardous Materials Team. The Hutchinson Fire Department averages 3,200 calls per year.

Emergency Medical Services delivery is a big part of the mission of the department. All Hutchinson Firefighters are trained to Emergency Medical Technician Level B. The department runs a tandem response with our hospital based county EMS system.

Other services that our progressive department provides are; fire inspection and code enforcement services, numerous fire prevention activities including smoke detector placement programs.

Beginning in 2004, construction will begin on a state of the art training facility. Upon completion of the training facility a new headquarters station will be built.

POSITION SUMMARY - FIREFIGHTER

Under the supervision of the Fire Captain, the Firefighter is a non-exempt position under FLSA. This employee is responsible for protecting the lives and property of the citizens of Hutchinson by performing fire suppression of structural, wildland, aircraft fires, technical rescues, hazardous materials responses, and providing emergency medical care. This employee should be in excellent physical condition and have the ability to remain poised under extremely difficult and hazardous circumstances. This employee should possess a strong mechanical aptitude, and effective communication and public relations skills. Any person employed in this position shall reside within Reno County. Work Schedule

Work Schedule: The department works a modified 56-hour work week. The 24-hour shift schedule is as follows: On-Off-On-Off-On-Off-Off-Off-Off. The schedule then repeats. Union Representation: The Firefighter position is represented by IAFF Local 179 as defined in the most current Memorandum of Understanding.
