Job Description:


Under the general supervision of the Director of Parks & Public Buildings and direct supervision of the Park & Public Buildings Supervisor, this employee performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work operations in the maintenance and improvement of parks, public properties, public buildings and facilities to maintain a safe, clean and user friendly environment. Pay starting $13 - $15 per hour depending on qualifications


  1. Monitors and maintains general appearance and functionality of all city parks, public properties public buildings and facilities, municipal swimming pool, municipal cemetery and assists with supervision of seasonal and part-time employees.  Performance is acceptable when:

           a.    Mowing, trimming, edging and clean-up is completed according to schedule with adherence to accepted standards.

           b.   Employee adheres to safe operation of all equipment and applicable safety procedures.

           c.   Prescribed landscape maintenance procedures are followed at appropriate timing intervals.  This includes cleaning flower beds, planting, mulching, fertilizing, de-weeding, trimming shrubs and trees, tree removals, lawn maintenance and tree watering, pond maintenance, grading and leveling dirt and planting and maintaining turf grass.

          d.   General park and building maintenance inspections are completed according to prescribed schedule.  This includes routine, cleaning, inspection, reporting and maintenance of parks, public grounds, public buildings and facilities and equipment. Staff also empties trash, picks up litter, cleans walks, play surfaces, restrooms and pavilions, repairs vandalism, and performs routine playground inspection and repairs.

          e.  Irrigation systems are maintained in proper working order and seasonally programmed to follow efficient and conservative schedules.

2.  Operate and maintain vehicles and equipment.

Performance is acceptable when:

  1. Employees are competent, safe and properly trained operators of all departmental equipment.
  2. Equipment is in useable condition and is available as needed.
  3. Existing maintenance schedule is followed and accurate records are maintained.
  4. Vehicles and equipment are washed as needed and at least monthly.
  5. Work/shop areas are kept clean, neat and organized.
  6. Seasonal equipment is ready and in place according to schedule.
  7. Necessary supplies are adequately stocked.
  8. Employee adheres to safe operation of all equipment and applicable safety procedures

3.         Performs all basic preventative maintenance and repair tasks on buildings and facilities related to building interiors and exteriors including lighting & ballast replacement, roofing, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, general maintenance, furniture moving, office set up and snow and ice removal.

Performance is acceptable when:

  1. Buildings, facilities and equipment are well maintained and frequency of breakdown is minimal.
  2. Prescribed maintenance procedures and schedules are followed.   
  3. Service records and documentation is maintained.
  4. Enforces safety in buildings and facilities
  5. Employee adheres to safe operation of all equipment and applicable safety procedures

The responsibilities described above represent the primary responsibilities of the job.  Other responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor as warranted by business needs.  The incumbent is expected to do all assigned responsibilities.


This position requires the ability to work independently, work well with others and/or perform in a team environment on a daily basis.  A working knowledge of turf & landscape management practices, arborist practices, knowledge of general building maintenance and repairs, irrigation systems.

The ability to read and interpret manuals, maps and written instructions, basic knowledge and use of a computer or tablet using programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, the internet and e-mail is expected. Use of communication, organizational, basic mathematical and mechanical aptitude is expected.

Problem solving, safety, financial impacts, recognition of priorities, organizational skills and time management is a factor in this position. This employee encounters problems with equipment malfunctions, swimming pool, irrigation systems, lawn, tree, landscape systems and building systems. It is expected that the employee make efficient use of city resources, including, finances, time, staff and equipment.

A valid Kansas driver’s license is required, commercial DL is preferred. The employee may be required to occasionally attend training and classes related to this position.


Two years of similar or related experience with, park, building & facility maintenance, landscaping, construction, grounds maintenance or similar field is preferred. Must be at least 18 years of age. High school diploma or GED required.  


Uses of a variety of gas powered and electric and hand tools related to the position is expected.

The ability to operate and maintain departmental equipment, including trucks, trailers, utility vehicles, mowers, tractors, skid steers, loaders, back hoe and gas powered equipment is expected.


Contact with the general public, co-workers, supervisory personnel and city officials is expected.


Adverse working conditions exist within this position. Work is both indoors and outdoors and therefore exposure to all types of weather conditions, chemicals, human waste, weeds , grass, rain, snow, machinery, excessive noise, heights, slopes, ponds, mud, work in confined spaces and working in and along city streets and amongst the public can be expected. Attention to safety, motivation, positive attitude, professionalism and the ability to get along with others is expected.
