Job Description:

Usual working days/hours: Monday - Friday

Location of work: 1109 N Minneapolis Wichita, KS 67214

Job Objectives:
Performs various analytical tests within the Firearms/Tool mark laboratory according to established procedures as developed by the Section supervisor and/or the Director of the Forensic Science Laboratories. Present analytical findings and give expert opinion in judicial proceedings.

Essential Job Functions:
• Examine, test and analyze firearms evidence using a variety of established laboratory procedures and complex analytical instrumentation. • Interpret laboratory findings and test results from evidentiary material. • Provide technical/peer review for other scientists. • Compose written laboratory reports. • Confer with law enforcement and/or attorneys in regard to test results and their interpretation. • Provide assistance to junior level scientists – training and/or casework. • Perform/maintain inventory of laboratory equipment, reagents, supplies, and evidence. • Participate in internal and/or external proficiency tests. • Document and protect evidence according to laboratory procedures, ensuring chain of custody is maintained. • Testify as an expert witness in a court of law. • Perform other related work as required. • May function as a section supervisor in his/her absence.

Job Standards:
Graduation from a four year college or university with in a degree in a natural science or a related field.  A minimum of 4 years of applicable laboratory experience. A masters degree or doctorate in an appropriate field may be substitutable for 1 or 2 years of experience, respectively. • Knowledge of advanced theoretical concepts of laboratory techniques. • Knowledge of the methods for preparing and maintaining laboratory records. • Skill in performing physical/chemical analyses and other tests used in the evaluation of items. • Knowledge of the scientific method and current scientific literature in the assigned field. • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. • Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions. • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. • Ability to testify in court.

Equipment:
• Knowledge of the function of modern laboratory analytical instrumentation, equipment, chemicals and lab safety materials. • Skill in the use of a personal computer
