Job Description:

CLASS TITLE:  Line Worker, Apprentice

 

ACCOUNTABLE TO:  Crew Chief, Lineman or assigned lead worker

 

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION:  Under supervision, assists linemen in the construction and maintenance of an electric distribution and transmission system as a part of a formal training program; cuts and trims trees.  Work varies, exercises limited judgment with some leeway for discretion and independent action.

 

MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY AND PERFORMANCE:

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES ARE:  Performs increasingly difficult line maintenance and construction work on non‑energized lines as proficiency increases; trims trees around power lines; during beginning periods of training, most work will be on the ground; after appropriate training, performs elementary line maintenance and repair work on non‑energized lines by placing transformers, insulators, and cross arms; climbs and sets poles; may work on power plant; thereafter, line work progresses to working on low energy lines or less complex and limited exposure work on higher voltage lines; assists in performing maintenance work in substations; assists in installing service drops; operates air switches; reads meters; builds meter loops; operates bucket truck, trencher, digger truck and chipper, as well as other equipment; is on call periodically;

 

OTHER DUTIES INCLUDE:  assists other departments with electrical work and Christmas decorations; performs other duties as assigned.  Prepares minimal records of own activities; responsible for equipment requiring minimal servicing; contact with others is incidental to performance of duties; heavy physical work is performed under undesirable conditions requiring constant safety considerations.

 

SUPERVISION ‑ RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS:  None

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:  Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school; possesses a vocational lineman's certificate; possession of a valid commercial driver's license

 

EXAMPLES OF PERFORMANCE CRITERIA AND QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Ability to use tools, equipment, methods and safety practices common to tree care and those used for line maintenance and construction; ability to learn first aid, CPR, and safety practices;

 

Ability to operate and perform minor maintenance of specialized equipment;

 

Ability to read and understand blueprints on working diagrams;

 

 

CLASS TITLE:  Lineman, Apprentice

 

EXAMPLES OF PERFORMANCE CRITERIA AND QUALIFICATIONS (cont.):

 

Ability to perform heavy physical work and ability to lift over 100 pounds and to lift and carry over 100 pounds;

 

Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, climb, crawl, twist, reach, grasp, push, pull and perform a variety of similar body movements;

 

Possesses hand/eye/foot coordination adequate to operate bucket trucks and vehicles, and to climb poles; ability to work at heights in a safe manner;

 

Ability to talk and hear in person and by telephone and two‑way radio; ability to see and read instructions and to observe closely and safely when near energized lines;

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, superiors, and the public.
