Performs firefighting work in the protection of life and property by combating, extinguishing and preventing fires under emergency conditions which involves personal hazard. Studies firefighting methods and techniques and performs routine work in the maintenance of firefighting equipment and apparatus.  These positions will be filled upon Board of County Commissioners approval.

Essential Job Functions:

Maintains preparation for and respond to emergency incidents during an assigned shift such as structure fires, hazardous material incidents, medical emergencies, plane crashes mutual aid request incidents, drownings, grass and field fires and other complex rescue incidents; responds to gas leaks, down power lines and other service calls.

Fights fires to protect property and save lives; drives at high speeds and safely to arrive at scenes in a safe manner; operates fire apparatus; connects and lays hose lines from a water source and figures friction loss and nozzle pressure; aims hose to spray water to confine and extinguish the fire seat; performs search and rescue operations to remove people that are trapped by fire; ventilates structure to get smoke and fire gases out of structure; performs salvage and overhaul operations.

Provides basic life support and EMT level medical treatment; recognizes the patient's illness or injury by interpreting symptoms; splints injuries, performs CPR, treats burns, ventilates and documents and maintains accurate records of all medical treatment provided.

Performs various activities after fire is controlled; removes burned debris and ensures fire is out; prevents rekindle; ensures that walls or structures are not in danger of falling; secures building by covering broken windows and holes in roof; guides occupants to agencies providing disaster assistance. 

May perform HAZMAT rescue and protection activities; identifies hazardous materials such as acid, flammable liquids, radioactive materials, poison, bacteria, etc.; determines and implements method of protection, containment, evacuation and decontamination; maintains vehicles, equipment and supply inventory; records all equipment used at a scene; ensures compliance with OSHA, EPA and Fire Protection Agency regulations and standards and provides training on same.

Inspects buildings in assigned area for the purpose of noting occupancy, existence of fire hazards and adequacy and location of exits, fire escapes and private fire equipment.

Job Standards:

Knowledge of operation and maintenance of various types of apparatus used by the fire department.
Knowledge of mechanics and a high degree of mechanical aptitude.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow workers.
Ability to read and understand departmental policies, rules, regulations and written material in the field of firefighting, to learn firefighting evolutions, techniques and methods and to apply such information to specific work situations.
Ability to analyze situations and to adopt effective courses of action giving due regard to the surrounding hazards and circumstances.
High School Diploma/GED or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Kansas Driver’s License – Must Obtain Class B within 60 days after hire.
Firefighter I Certification.
Current CPAT Certification or one year of experience in a paid full-time firefighter positio.
At the time of hire, must have a current Kansas EMT or AEMT, or Paramedic Certification; or the ability to gain Kansas certification within 60 days of their respective medical certification

Testing/Screening Requested:

Applicant will go through a testing process that will include a written test and a physical agility test to determine compatibility with the Fire Service. These competencies should already be completed through a certified CPAT process.


Will use standard equipment found in the Fire Service industry

Work Environment:

Ability to work under adverse conditions of heat, smoke, noise, darkness, vibration, weather, chemical environment and emotional stress.
