Position Title:                                       Groundman

POSITION SUMMARY:                        

The Groundman performs physical work in the construction and maintenance of the electric distribution system for the City of Ottawa. The employee will take instruction from every individual on the crew and progressively learn all departmental procedures, practices, and safety regulations. Within one year of employment, employee must enroll in the Apprentice Program and then progress to Journey Level Lineman.

Hours:                                                  7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday – Friday.  Overtime and Emergency Call Outs as required.

Additional Information:

High School Diploma or GED required.

Some experience in electric distribution preferred..

Requires possession of a valid Kansas Commercial Driver’s License, Class B, with airbrakes endorsement.

Must be insurable by the City’s insurance carrier.

Summary

The Groundman performs physical work in the construction and maintenance of the electric distribution system for the City of Ottawa. The employee will take instruction from every individual on the crew and progressively learn all departmental procedures, practices, and safety regulations. Essential Job Functions

  • Work on all single-phase and three-phase applications in the electric distribution system.
  • Drive/operate bucket or tree truck, and work from bucket or ladder as needed.
  • Operate chainsaws, tree pruners, and chippers.
  • Operate trencher and backhoe for installation. Install underground primary and secondary, street light poles, street lights, and wiring.
  • Assist crews in building and hooking up transformer banks, setting and changing out electric poles, setting pad mounts, and hanging transformers.
  • Assist crews in making stress cones for de-energized underground residential distribution (URD) primary and installing URD primary and secondary conductors.
  • Assist in installing street light poles, street lights, and wiring.

Ancillary Job Functions

  • Troubleshoot electric distribution problems.
  • Accept on-call duty as required.
  • Comply with all City ordinances and policies, as well as federal and state laws and ordinances.
  • Assist other departments and perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience – An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Some experience with electric distribution preferred.
  • Must maintain a valid Kansas CDL, Class B, with airbrakes endorsement.

Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

  • May be required to work in confined spaces, hazardous traffic conditions, or high/dangerous places.
  • May be exposed to inclement outdoor weather, vibration, mechanical oils, airborne particles/fumes, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, potentially hazardous or cancer-causing agents/chemicals, or loud noise levels.
