40 hours per week, 7 days a week operation
Location of work:
Supervises, trains, monitors and participates in the husbandry care of zoo elephants, grounds and facilities. Prepares and maintains records for all aspects of animal management. Provides customer service to zoo defined customers. Performs all tasks using zoo resources for measurable productivity.
Essential Job Functions:
Prepares animal diets, cuts fruit and fish, shreds meat, mixes grains, hauls hay and alfalfa bales and fills water tubs and pools; prepares special diets; prepares bulk amounts of food in tubs. Observes and monitors the health of the collection including threatened or endangered animals. Performs animal husbandry care, specializing in experience with African Elephants. Monitors incubation process of eggs. Cleans animal areas and holding facilities. Captures and restrains animals for loading and shipping or for routine or non-routine medical procedures. Prepares and maintains records of all aspects of animal managements. Driving of Zoo employee may be required for supply needs, diet deliveries, animal transporting or dump runs.
Two years coursework from an accredited college or university or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Two years on the job experience working with elephants in an environment that includes herd management. Completion of Association of Zoos & Aquariums, Principles of Elephant Management Course I, preferred. Valid State of Kansas Drivers License.
No testing beyond County requirements.
Hose, shovel, scrub, rake, food preparation equipment, motor vehicle; animal care equipment and office equipment.
Outdoor and indoor, exposed to cleaning chemicals, animal waste, dust and weather.
