Job Objectives:
To maintain and repair Sedgwick County light duty equipment. Perform maintenance and diagnostic checks to ensure vehicles operate under the conditions which they are designed to be used.

Essential Job Functions:
Repairs and maintains light duty county vehicles and their associated systems such as electrical, hydraulic, compression and water pumps. Performs complete overhaul and mechanical work on County equipment; automobile, light trucks, ambulances, police pursuit vehicles, fire vehicles and other standard and specialized equipment; performs preventative maintenance and diagnostic work on vehicles. Repairs and overhauls transmissions, differentials, front and rear-end assemblies. Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts, valves, pistons, piston rings, brakes, main bearing assembly, cooling, ignition, and fuel systems. Repairs and overhauls, motors, generators, clutches, replaces brake axles and springs. Repairs and overhauls air compressors, hydraulic systems and other specialized equipment. Operates miscellaneous machinist and welding equipment in the process of the work. Installation of various police equipment including light bars, radios, antennas, GPS, data radios, sirens, control modules for police equipment and consoles. WHEN ASSIGNED AS AMBULANCE MECHANIC- Services all Emergency Medical Services vehicles and diagnoses and repairs all mechanical and electrical problems associated with the vehicles. Operates miscellaneous machinist and welding equipment in the process of the work. Performs preventative maintenance checks on all Emergency Medical Service vehicles. Performs safety inspections to maintain State of Kansas Certification. Performs inspections of all newly acquired ambulance; assists in setting requirements for new emergency vehicles. Diagnoses problems and repairs all ambulances; performs engine overhauls, transmission overhauls, differential overhauls, and suspension repair; repairs or replaces alternators, tire brakes, heating and air conditioning systems, chassis electrical systems, emergency lighting systems, exhaust systems, fuel systems, airborne systems, medial oxygen systems, and medical suction systems. Plans and coordinates working schedules with regard to the severity of the problem and the urgency for the vehicle to be returned to service. May be on-call during weekends and off-duty hours.

Job Standards:
High School Diploma or equivalent. Must be ASE certified Two years experience as a Mechanic I or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, abilities and competencies.

Work Environment:
Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environment conditions such as dirt, dust, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards and toxic/poisonous agents. Tasks involve the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling moderately heavy objects and materials weighing 50 to 100 pounds. Requires the ability to stand for long periods of time.
