Cowley County is located in south central Kansas just to the southeast of Wichita on the Oklahoma border. The County offers both a rural setting and two major cities, Arkansas City and Winfield, all within an easy drive to urban amenities. The County is also home to six smaller rural communities, specifically Atlanta, Burden, Cambridge, Dexter, and Udall (a small portion of Geuda Springs reaches into western Cowley County). Cowley County residents place a high priority on education. The County serves as the primary home to five public school districts; another five school districts cross county lines into adjoining counties. Public school facilities have recently undergone extensive improvements. At the post-secondary level, Southwestern College in Winfield offers a wide array of four-year and masters-level degree programs, and Cowley College in Arkansas City offers associate degrees and vocational-technical education.
A wide variety of recreational opportunities is available in Cowley County. Arkansas City and Winfield offer public and private golf courses. Quail Ridge in Winfield is ranked as one of the top municipal courses in Kansas. Swimming, skiing, boating and fishing are available at the Winfield City Lake or nearby Kaw Reservoir. Fishing is also available at the State Lake and along the Walnut and Arkansas rivers. Hunters find a variety of game birds and deer in season. Naturalists can appreciate local flora and fauna at Chaplin Nature Center outside of Arkansas City or the newly created nature center east of Winfield's Island Park. Both cities have recently completed renovations to their fitness centers.
Cultural opportunities in Cowley County include performances at the Brown Center of Cowley College. In Arkansas City special events include the annual Prairie Fest (an art festival and a music festival) in June, Maverick Rodeo in August, World Festival Celebration on Labor Day Weekend (which features matadors from around the world), the Last Run Car Show in September, and the Arkalalah fall festival in late October. In Winfield special events include include Kanza Days in May, the Kansas and Oklahoma Antique Steam & Gas Engine Show in August, the Cowley County Fair in August, the Walnut Valley Music Festival in September, and Art in the Park in October.

· Group Optional Life $5,000 to $200,0000 coverage may be purchased.
LEAVE and HOLIDAYS
Employees accrue between 12 and 14 days of vacation depending upon their length of service and approximately 8 hours of sick leave per month. Cowley County employees enjoy legal holidays as established by the Board of Cowley County Commissioners.
