ASSISTANT TEACHER - "ZOO SPROUTS"

Reports to:  Lead Teacher /Curator of Education

(Regular   Full-Time   Non-exempt)           Starting Wage:  $10/hr.

Closes:  August 20, 2017 - Review of applications will begin August 7th

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Assistant Teacher position contributes to the mission of Sunset Zoo by providing a safe environment and developmentally age-appropriate activities for Sunset Zoo’s nature-based early childhood program.  This position assists in developing and maintaining positive relationships with families whose children are enrolled in the program.  This position is responsible for assisting the Lead Teacher in ensuring the nature-based early childhood program operates in accordance with all licensing standards, policies, and procedures. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Ability to implement a unique, nature-based curriculum for two and a half to school-aged children. (Daily)
Ability to serve in a team setting to create a positive learning environment both indoors and outdoors  to  foster individualized development in motor, cognitive, language, social, emotional, and creative domains of young children. (Daily)
Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with families whose children are enrolled in Sunset Zoo’s early childhood program. (Daily)
Ability to communicate with parents regarding their child’s progress through a variety of means, including parent-teacher conferences, daily written and verbal communication, etc. (As Needed)
Ability to maintain an empathetic, warm, relaxed, and nurturing atmosphere in which children/families  feel secure, content and receptive to learning. (Daily)
Assist in managing partnerships associated with Sunset Zoo’s early childhood program. (Daily)
Ability to be able to communicate in English language, orally and in written form with the general public and staff members using proper grammar, punctuation and spelling. (Daily)
Possess animal knowledge and excellent written and oral communication to effectively portray outstanding service for Sunset Zoo. (Daily)
Ability to maintain licensing requirements of the pre-school daycare program as overseen by the Riley County Health Department and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.  (Daily)
Assist in maintaining files on each child enrolled in Sunset Zoo’s early childhood program to ensure compliance with Kansas Department of Health and Environment regulations (Monthly)
Must be able to maintain a valid Class C Kansas driver's license.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

This regular full-time position reports to the Lead Teacher, who reports to the Curator of Education, who reports to the Zoo Director, who reports to the Parks and Recreation Director, who reports to the City Manager, who in turn reports to the City Commission.  The Assistant Teacher is accountable, in part, through supervision and training of Teacher Aides and volunteers. 

The Sunset Zoo nature-based early childhood program is responsible for providing a safe environment and developmentally age-appropriate program in accordance with all licensing standards, policies, and procedures.  The program is responsible for promoting a positive educational experience for participants of Sunset Zoo, working with local school districts and educational organizations to promote usage of Zoo facilities and programs, as well as presenting related programming to schools and organizations state-wide.

The Assistant Teacher works under minimal supervision.  The incumbent must be able to make independent decisions based on sound judgment.  The incumbent assists with planning and implementing the nature-based early childhood education program.  The incumbent must be comfortable with interacting with a diverse group both in small private interactions and public speaking engagements. 

The incumbent must make sure that all equipment and supplies used by the early childhood program are in working condition. The incumbent may occasionally have to show staff and volunteers  how to use the equipment properly.  The Assistant Teacher position can be measured by the satisfaction of participants, along with the quantity and quality of programs presented. .

The incumbent must follow the Zoo departmental rules and regulations and the City's personnel policies and procedures in performance of duties.  The incumbent is responsible for securing the education area within the Zoo, and must fully understand and take responsibility for securing this area properly. 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Ability to work independently, manage projects, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
Ability to make sound decisions based on the Zoo departmental rules and regulations and the City’s personnel policies and procedures.
Possess general knowledge of animals and basic biological concepts.
Model and maintain confidentiality in and outside of the classroom setting in regard to children, parents, staff, students, and volunteers.
Promote positive community awareness of the unique programming of Sunset Zoo’s nature and animal-based daycare program. 
Maintain positive relationships with all Zoo donors and support organizations.
Assist with securing all necessary application and release forms.
Maintain clean work environment and program supplies.
Other duties assigned. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:

Working knowledge of early childhood education principles, techniques and methods.  Some knowledge of animals, zoos and zoo operations.  Must be skilled in public speaking, problem solving, and performing public relations activities.  Able to write and develop pre-school educational  curriculum meeting all licensing standards.  Incumbent will establish and maintain effective working conditions with superiors, City employees, Docents, Explorers, Junior Zookeepers and the general public.  Some knowledge of materials and equipment used in audio-visual instruction needed.  Flexible schedule is a necessity. Possession of, or the ability to obtain a valid Kansas Class C Driver's License within 90 days of employment.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:

Meet all qualifications as outlined by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for programs licensed for more than 24 children.

Child Development Associate (CDA) is preferred.

Volunteer experience at Sunset Zoo or any other zoo very helpful.

First/Aide/CPR Certification Preferred

Required Knowledge:
