Position Summary:

This is a general Public Health nursing position with work involving direct nursing services for clients in the clinical setting as well as general work in assessment, implementation, and evaluation of public health in the community. Duties may include immunizations, WIC, child care licensing, Communicable Disease testing, tracking/investigation, and treatment, child health and adult health nursing programs including family planning. Work is performed with professional independence in accordance with established County and department policies, protocols, and procedures.  Registered Nurse is supervised by the Director or Assistant Director.

Franklin County participates in the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS & KP&F).

Additional Information:

Provides health education regarding communicable disease, family planning, and sexually transmitted disease to clients and the general public.

Participates in ongoing quality improvement and performance management activities with the department.

Conducts education and outreach clinics and health fairs, may be a member of community efforts in planning, and prevention;

Provides comprehensive case management, which may include collaborating with other agencies.

Follows safety practices and sanitary procedures; proper lifting techniques; rules, regulations, and procedures to properly dispose of cleaning fluids, and chemicals.

Ability to establish and to maintain effective working relationships with all employees, officials, and the public and to communicate effectively verbally or in writing is required.

JOB SUMMARY:

This is a general Public Health nursing position with work involving direct nursing services for clients in the clinical setting as well as general work in assessment, implementation, and evaluation of public health in the community. Duties may include immunizations, WIC, child care licensing, Communicable Disease testing, tracking/investigation, and treatment, child health and adult health nursing programs including family planning. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Participates in providing the ten essential services of public health;
  • Administers immunizations appropriate to individual history and ACIP guidelines or under direct order by a physician. Follows Vaccine for Children and Kansas Department of Health and Environment policies for use of vaccine.
  • Administers medications for TB and STDs, educates clients on potential side effects, and monitors for adverse reaction;
  • Obtains laboratory specimens for screening and/or the diagnoses of communicable diseases;
  • Performs communicable disease contact investigations;
  • Performs phlebotomy and collects urine pregnancy testing and counseling;
  • Provides health and wellness screenings, including KBH assessments, for conditions and determines appropriate action based on referral criteria.  Interprets health screening findings to the client and family, and makes appropriate referrals;
  • Conducts health assessments including conducting physical assessments, obtaining blood pressure, temperature, measurements and other data, and developing information on health history, diet history, and family health status;
  • Employs protocols for Title X family planning relative to programs offered by the Health Department, including family planning program;
  • Provides health education regarding communicable disease, family planning, and sexually transmitted disease to clients and the general public;
  • Counsels clients and families in meeting health needs including health promotion, nutrition, and illness care;
  • Cooperates, communicates, coordinates and collaborates with community partners on health-promoting committees and activities;
  • Performs WIC nutritional risk assessment, nutrition counseling and other WIC duties as needed;
  • Conducts education and outreach clinics and health fairs, may be a member of community efforts in planning, and prevention;
  • Provides comprehensive case management, which may include collaborating with other agencies;
  • Coordinates with other professionals to accommodate patient needs;
  • Prepares and maintains required clinic practice records, reports and statistics;
  • Provide oversight and training to nursing students and medical assistants;
  • Prepare for natural and man-made disasters or emergency responses related to public health concerns;
  • Participates in ongoing quality improvement and performance management activities with the department;
  • Other duties as assigned.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Must have current Kansas Registered Nurse License and complete annual continuing education requirements;
  • Must possess and maintain a current Kansas Driver’s License;
  • Maintain current CPR certification;
  • Certification for HIV/AIDS testing and counseling, certification in lab specimen packaging and handling;
  • Certified as a DOT collector for urine drug screens;
  • Minimum of ICS 100, 700, 200 and 800 (within 6 months of hire).

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Registered Nurse degree from certified college or university;
  • or four to five years related experience and/or training;
  • or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent;
  • or four to five years related experience and/or training;
  • or equivalent combination of education and experience.
