Job Objectives:
Plans, directs and schedules the work and services of Sedgwick County Heavy Equipment shop. Supervises and monitors work of technicians, establishes priorities and assigns work. Instructs and trains in correct methods and inspects work. Establishes uniform practices relating to automotive repair and preventative maintenance services.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Supervises the technicians and inspects works for quality maintenance
  • Establishes priorities and assigns work
  • Plans, schedules and ensures technician accountability at 65%
  • Instructs and trains in correct methods and inspects work
  • Reviews and evaluates employee performance
  • Ensures safety protocols in shop
  • Encourage Technician Development Maintaining Vehicle Availability
  • Oversees scheduled and un scheduled maintenance in shop at 95%
  • Supervises and assists technicians by verifying the need for and accuracy of repairs
  • Makes Estimates, write quotes and creates work orders
  • Ensures all work orders are entered accurately into Faster Fleet software
  • Assists in the development of specifications for vehicle/equipment replacement
  • Oversees the Preventative Maintenance Program keeping compliant at 95%
  • Develops and monitors equipment preventative maintenance schedules
  • Coordinates with departments to schedule equipment for preventative maintenance
  • Makes recommendations on preventative maintenance intervals

Job Standards:

  • Five years of mechanical experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, abilities and competencies
  • Must be ASE Certified in Medium/Heavy Duty Trucks Medium work.
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Testing/Screening Requested:


  • Vehicle diagnostic equipment
  • Battery/ Alt. testing equipment
  • A/C Recovery equipment
  • Welders & Torches Bearing Press Brake Lathe Drill Press.
  • Misc shop equipment

Work Environment:

  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Stooping. Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Lifting. Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Fingering. Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
