Job Description:

SUMMARY

The Equipment Operator 1 hauls materials such as sand and rock to county road projects, hauls asphalt premix, and works on asphalt road construction projects as well as performs maintenance and construction functions on county bridges.  In addition to the safe and efficient operation of vehicles, the truck driver performs routine maintenance on assigned equipment.  This position also works on bridge projects and others as necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Comply with all countywide and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Operate equipment such as a truck, dump truck, loader, grader, roller, dozer, tractor, welder and torch, and asphalt machine.  Also transport materials to the work site.  Operate other equipment such as jack hammer, air compressor, cutting torch, electric welder and similar equipment.
  • Load materials and perform manual work related to the tasks required.
  • Maintain accurate records of daily mileage, materials delivered and locations.
  • Tarp and un-tarp all loads.
  • Spread gravel, sand, rock and asphalt.
  • Work on the road patching crew.  Patch road and bridge surfaces using cold or hot mix.
  • Work on all types of construction and maintenance adjacent to traffic and around heavy equipment.
  • Transport materials and equipment to job sites as needed, such as clay, rock, sand, etc.
  • Perform road construction work such as shaping the road and embankments, level construction sites and packing asphalt.
  • Perform road and bridge construction and maintenance work such as mowing ditches, installing and maintaining culverts and filling washouts.
  • Clear trees and brush from roadways.
  • Remove snow and ice from roads and bridges in the winter.
  • Remove and resets culverts, remove debris from ditches and culverts, remove older bridges, repair guard rails and decks.  Perform cutting and welding operations and paint bridges.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide flagging function at road construction projects.
  • Perform minor vehicle maintenance.  Provide maintenance and care of equipment and minor equipment repair.
  • Perform housekeeping functions in the shop.
  • Perform fueling, cleaning and washing of the vehicles.
  • Operate tractors, mowers and other related vehicles.  Operate farm type tractors.
  • Cut grass and weeds around guardrails and signposts.
  • Tree trimming and brush clearance, install signs, performing flood barricading and maintenance.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of how to secure loads.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety operation of equipment.
  • Knowledge of the County roads and geography.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials safety.
  • Ability to focus on the task at hand, pay attention to other traffic hazards and drive continuously for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION

High School Diploma or GED

One to two years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.

 

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s license with air brakes.
