Job Objectives:

Provide a safe environment for the youth to learn socially acceptable behaviors.  This is done through supervision of the youth and teaching new ways of dealing with situations and people.  Provide physical, medical and emotional care to the youth while they are in the facility.  Responsibilities will include maintaining proper supervision, interpersonal relations, pubic social skills and security.

Essential Job Functions:

Ensure facility security and the safety of all youth and staff by strictly following all security policies and procedures and by always remaining alert and aware of the detention environment.  Monitor, document and properly communicate the observed physical and mental health of the detention youth.  Supervise all of the youths’ activities and manage youth behaviors by using the facility’s behavior management program.  Accurately complete all required and necessary records with legible handwriting, proper sentence structure and correct spelling.  Safely escort and transport, via facility vehicle, youth to and from court hearings and appointments.  Be a positive role model for the youth by always demonstrating appropriate behaviors both on and off duty.  Communicate and work as a team in a professional, respectful, positive and constructive manner.  Consistently demonstrate regular attendance and good punctuality.  Assist with facility maintenance and housekeeping.

Job Standards:

High school diploma or G.E.D. plus three (3) semester hours of college level study in adolescent development, psychology or related field or forty-five (45) hours in documented training in child care or child development or one (1) year of experience as a youth care worker or house parent in a facility serving youth of the same age.  Employee is responsible for obtaining and maintaining all certification requirements relative to the position.  Must possess a valid State of Kansas driver’s license.

Testing/Screening Requested:

Must pass a pre-employment Physical Capacity Profile and Drug Screen.

Equipment:

Operate all job related machinery, equipment, tools and other aids as required, necessary or needed in the performance of these job duties.

Work Environment:

75% indoors and 25% outdoors.  Surroundings are busy and sometimes noisy, occasionally potentially harmful situations arise (i.e., restraining an out of control youth). Vehicles are sometimes hot in summer and cold in winter.  Some risks may arise from youth illnesses, restraining youth, occasional physical and verbal abuse by residents, driving in bad weather, de-escalating an out of control youth and risk of gang violence.  Due to lack of proper hygiene, some youth may carry lice and communicable diseases.
