Job Title: Firefighter
Salary: $37500.00 Annually
Reports to: Shift Captain (designated Supervisory Personnel)
Primary Functions of Work:
Under supervision of the Shift Captain, the Firefighter performs duties in the protection of life and property. This position is responsible for the safe operation and transportation of crews and equipment to emergencies and other non-emergency locations. Strategically places apparatus at emergency and non-emergency scenes. Demonstrates proficiency in operating fire fighting apparatus and equipment. Performs Emergency Medical Technician duties. May train other fire personnel. Participates in fire prevention programs, fire code inspections, pre-fire planning, public education programs, hazardous materials response, technical rescues and minor station and vehicle maintenance. Participates in continuing and advanced training programs and drills.
Essential Functions of Work
- Maintains proficiency of firefighting skills
- Performs Emergency Medical Technician duties
- Safely Drives and operates fire department apparatus
- Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance
- Operates a variety of tools and equipment, including power tools, generators, hydraulic equipment, ladders, etc.
- Completes appropriate records and reports
- Participates in fire prevention, public education programs, pre-fire plans, building inspections.
- Cleans and maintains apparatus, tools, equipment, station and grounds
- Assists in investigation of fire scenes
- Participates in continuing and advanced training and drills
- Participates in periodic testing of fire pumps, hose, ladders and other equipment
- Assists in training of new employees
- Trains and maintains good physical condition
- May assume Shift Captain duties in the absence of the Captain
- May assume Incident Commander role
- Exhibits a positive attitude towards position, co-workers, supervisory personnel, other City employees and the general public
- Other related duties as deemed necessary or as required
Experience: No previous experience is required. One to three years firefighting experience and certification as an Emergency Medical Technician is preferred. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary skills and certifications to perform the functions of the position after one year in the position.
Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Requires Firefighter I Certification within one year of employment. Requires continuing education on duty and off duty to maintain skills. Requires a valid Non-commercial Class B driver’s license.
Skills: Knowledge of fire fighting techniques is required. The firefighter must be able to operate all hydraulic equipment, various saws, generators and associated tools and appliances. Be proficient with the use of rope rescue techniques, and be competent in the delivery of emergency medical treatment. The firefighter must have a working knowledge of the City, Township and County geography. Understanding of fire-flow hydraulics, the ability to understand written and verbal directions. The ability to anticipate problems, react to sudden changes in conditions on the emergency scene. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws governing the fire service. Understanding and ability to utilize the NIMS system.
Problem solving: Frequent problem solving exists in this position. The firefighter encounters problems with fire suppression, emergency medical treatment, and equipment malfunctions.
Decision-making: Frequent decision-making exists in this position. The firefighter must make decisions in providing emergency medical treatment, performance of daily duties, the quickest, safest and most direct route to the emergency. Decision making on the emergency scene is required to ensure the safety of fellow firefighters and the citizens.
Accountability: Employee is not responsible for budgetary recommendations of the department throughout the year, and does not participate in the annual budget process.
Supervision: Supervision is provided and job related decisions are reviewed by the Shift Captain and the Fire Chief. Employee may have supervisory responsibility over members of the on-call personnel.
Personal Relations: Continual contact with other city departments and the general public.
Working Conditions: Adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to extremes of heat and cold is expected. This employee is also exposed to structural collapses, contact with hazardous materials, explosives, asbestos, and radiation, work from heights and in confined spaces, work with and around heavy machinery. This position contains a significant risk to personal safety. Exposure to blood borne pathogens while responding to and providing emergency medical treatment can be expected.
Physical Requirements: Physical effort is required. Examples include bending, stooping, lifting, and heat and cold exposure. The employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate tools or controls, must be able to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move heavy objects (200 lb.). Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
