Usual working days/hours:

Monday-Friday 7:00 am-6:00 pm, 40 hour week

Job Objectives:
Performs professional assessment, intake, case planning, supervision, casework, and rehabilitation activities to help juvenile or adult clients be successful in maintaining compliance with court orders and supervision goals within the Division of Corrections.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Completes an accurate and thorough assessment on each assigned client and develops a comprehensive and effective written case plan that targets the client’s criminogenic needs.
  • Assists all assigned clients in following their terms and conditions of supervision and their individual case/program plan by interacting with them at home, work, school, treatment and facilities.
  • Incorporates evidence-based practices including motivational interviewing, cognitive skills and use of graduated responses.
  • Conducts drug/alcohol screenings on clients through urinalysis and/or breathalyzer testing.
  • Performs screening with metal detectors to prevent weapons from entering the workplace.
  • May perform searches of personal property, homes and vehicles.
  • Provides job seeking information and techniques; identifies appropriate job possibilities; communicates with employers; assists clients in securing, approving, and verifying employment.
  • Conducts and facilitates behavioral cognitive groups as assigned.
  • Assists law enforcement officers serve arrest warrants.
  • May be required to work various hours as assigned.
  • Secures available staff and community resources to meet client needs.
  • Performs liaison duties in coordinating client’s involvement with outside referral agencies to access health care, treatment, housing and any other necessary community services.
  • Monitors client participation in case/program plan activities by making contacts with providers, employers, family members and other professionals, as appropriate.
  • Reports client’s progress and all alleged violations of supervision to the court as necessary, which includes verbal and written reports and hearing reviews.
  • Participates in court hearings, prepares court reports, makes recommendations and presents information to the Judge, District Attorney, and Defense Attorney.
  • Creates and maintains an individual file on each client ensuring all legal documents, reports, social documents, chronological and statistical reports, etc. are present and updated per policy.
  • Completes all data entry into the required database within prescribed timeframes.
  • Performs related work as required Responsible use of county resources.
  • Frequent contact with client’s family members, neighbors, employers, court officers, law enforcement and service providers.
  • Requires the ability to exert moderate physical effort in sedentary to light work involving moving from one area of the office to another, light lifting, standing, walking, stair climbing and driving to attend court hearings and make field visits to clients at their home, worksite, school and service providers.
  • Ability to endure verbal and mental abuse when confronted by hostile views and opinions of clients and their families.
  • Requires sufficient strength and coordination to defend one’s self from attack.
  • Requires sufficient hand-eye coordination to perform skilled repetitive movements such as keyboarding and operating basic office machines, such as a personal computer, fax, copy machine, etc. Requires sufficient abilities in vision, hearing, and sense of smell in order to complete tasks which involve perception, discernment, written, verbal, and listening skills.
  • Requires bending, color identification, gripping hands and fingers, hearing voice conversations, pulling, pushing, reaching, sitting, standing and walking for long periods.
  • Tasks are regularly performed inside buildings with limited exposure to adverse environmental conditions, however, travel outside is required and involves exposure to allergens, insects, dogs and other pets and safety hazards visiting client homes/vehicles. Requires the ability to operate a motor vehicle. DNA, alcohol and drug screening will involve exposure to saliva and urine, blood borne pathogens, illnesses and diseases.
  • Dependable and timely attendance is required.
  • Ability to become certified in required assessment tools and/or behavioral cognitive groups; ability to facilitate behavior change groups.
  • Ability to build effective professional casework relationships with resistive individuals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to complete 40 hours of annual training.
  • Ability to comprehend and comply with policies, procedures and standards.

  • New hires will be required to successfully complete the ISO Certification exam within the initial probationary period.
  • Skill in keyboarding/typing.


Job Standards:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Social Work, or a related field AND one year experience in probation, parole, social work, counseling or related work with juvenile and/or adult offenders.
  • Transcript verifying education credits is required.
  • Professional references are required to verify the related work experience.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Valid Driver’s License and good driving record that meets the requirement of Sedgwick County Fleet Vehicle Operation and Usage Policy.
  • Personal vehicle for use when county vehicle is not available (employee reimbursement is provided by County).
  • Proof of liability insurance required on personal vehicle.
  • Pass legal background check, Child and Adult Abuse & Neglect Central Registry checks, KCJIS Security Policy (fingerprint) check, and pre-employment screen for alcohol and drugs.
  • Must also meet the required conditions contained in KSA 65-516 and KAR 28-4-356.
  • Must meet minimum levels on pre-employment testing of keyboarding/typing 30 wpm.

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in an office environment and in the community.
  • Will have some exposure to hostile people.
  • Must be available to work outside normal business hours on occasion.
  • May be required to serve 24 hour on-call duty for one week period on rotating basis.
