JOB SUMMARY

The job duties of the Educational Liaison include but are not limited to provide assistance to students participating in the Truancy Success Program; to create a collaboration between Community Corrections and USD 475 and assist with Truancy Court; to help students improve their attendance and grades; to provide referrals/outside resources to help mitigate any existing personal or familial issues, to work with AARC program, intake, Court Services, other Community Corrections entities, as well as USD 475 staff and administrators to provide needed services to students and their families; and to provide responsive, courteous and efficient service to all county residents and the general public.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties described below are indicative of what the Educational Liaison might be asked to perform. This job description is to incorporate any County Resolutions for the position of Educational Liaison. This position description is not designed to list all tasks and responsibilities of this position. Geary County reserves the right to revise or change job duties as the need may arise. Administrative Functions:

  • Monitor daily attendance of students enrolled in the Junction City High School, focusing on students struggling with attendance.
  • Encourage participation in Truancy Court for appropriate cases. Inform/explain truancy laws and future consequences of continued absences.
  • Supervise and monitor a caseload of students entering the USD 475 Truancy Process as well as students assigned to the 8th JD/USD 475 Truancy Court.
  • Conduct thorough intakes on all students assigned to the program.
  • Assess student needs and make appropriate referrals to community resources (education, employment, counseling, etc.)
  • Develop a student improvement plan.
  • Conduct field/home visits to each student’s home and/or place of employment.
  • Establish and maintain open communication with students, parents/guardians and staff of JCHS.
  • Create documentation for parents, the Truancy Court Panel, the county attorney’s Office and District court regarding the standing/progress of students in violation of Compulsory Attendance Laws.
  • Assist the Prevention Coordinator with the Truancy Court Program.
  • Serve as the point of contact for all requests of information for students under Court supervision.
  • Attend court hearings (Truancy, Juvenile Offender, and CINC), school due process or attendance contract hearings, and Truancy Collaboration Meetings.
  • Perform related work as required.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required at the time of hire or for the continuation of employment.

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, corrections, psychology, sociology, counseling, social work or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience working with juvenile offenders.
  • Motivational Interviewing certification required.
  • Participate in a minimum of 40 job-related hours of training each fiscal year, as funding allows.
  • A valid Kansas driver’s license required.
  • Must pass criminal background check, including Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check.
  • Must reside within a 30 mile radius of worksite within 90 days of employment.

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of Kansas criminal law needed as well as a strong understanding of the related Kansas Administrative Rule and Regulations.
  • Knowledge of both KDOC state standards.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices in corrections:
    • Kansas Department of Corrections Standards.
    • Kansas Criminal Code
    • Kansas Sentencing Guidelines
    • Kansas Juvenile Offender and Child-in-Need of Care Codes.
  • Knowledge of the policies and procedures of Community Corrections.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures unique and specific to Geary County and the 8th Judicial District.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with probation departments, outside service providers, and the community.
  • Ability to provide appropriate intervention skills to truant youth and families.
  • Ability to work constructively and cooperatively with JCHS staff, public officials, and members of the public.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with the public.
  • Ability to take control of situations in a responsible manner.
  • Ability to interpret and implement local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence, Federal, State, and local regulations, safety manuals, operating and repair manuals, warning labels, etc.

 

EQUIPMENT KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

  • Ability to operate various types of equipment – standard office equipment, computer and intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office software, etc.
  • Other equipment could be required.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a professional and friendly manner with customers, citizens, co-workers and management.
  • Ability to communicate in both written and verbal form.
  • Ability to communicate information and teach and train others regarding policies and processes in both written and verbal form.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

 

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to respond to complaints and grievances posed by the public.
  • Ability to define problems and deal with a variety of situations.
  • Ability to think quickly, maintain self-control, and adapt to stressful situations.
  • Ability to use good judgment and effectively solve problems.

Work Environment:

  • Works primarily in an office setting.
  • Nature of the work may place employee in varying levels of stressful situations.
  • Requires travel during the working hours.
  • Must be available for meetings with families and other professionals outside of the regular 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. work schedule. Some evening and weekend availability is required.
  • Due to the volume, scope, size of staff and nature of public service this office provides, full-time regular attendance is essential.
