Job Description:

The GCCC Police Officer provides law enforcement and public safety services to the college community to include enforcement of criminal statutes, parking enforcement, crime prevention, patrol activity, accident investigation, resolution of domestic and other disturbances, prosecution support, non-criminal public safety services, and enforcement of college policies, rules, and regulations. To carry out these responsibilities, officers monitor buildings, patrol grounds for suspicious activity, and watch for any safety hazards. Officers answer calls for service typical of the college environment such as responding to medical emergencies, lock and unlock classroom doors, money escorts, recover property, and keep campus thoroughfares and lots unobstructed. All assignments involve responsibility for tactful and courteous treatment of the public and conscientious and efficient performance of duties.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains confidentiality on all records, reports, and incidents that are investigated by the GCCC Police Department; as well as any other record and/or information that is accessible to the department.
  • Patrols on foot, or by patrol vehicle. Operates vehicle in a safe and effective manner. Displays proper use of patrol vehicle to arrive promptly at a dispatched location, uses emergency equipment to signal traffic stop, and patrols college campus or assigned area. Investigates offenses and any suspicious conditions, capable of apprehending, arresting, and charging of suspect(s), advises suspect of Miranda rights, negotiates with a suspect to persuade surrender, uses hand to hand combat, and other weapons to subdue suspect, fires weapon to defend self or others life, recovers and protects evidence, processes lost and found property, restrains and transports prisoners to appropriate facilities, responsible for submitting reports for review and approval, and testify in court as required.
  • If necessary, transports prisoners, victims, witnesses, and others.  While doing so, operates the vehicle in a safe and effective manner. Searches suspects before and after transportation. Searches vehicle after transportation. Physically restrains persons in custody and maintains control over person being transported.
  • Displays proper use of defensive and restraining equipment. Wears body armor, places handcuffs on prisoners safely, physically subdues and controls suspects. Uses defensive tactics authorized by department. Understands and applies legal standards concerning use of firearms; makes decisions under stress; maintains physical agility, disarms persons safely and reacts quickly to danger.
  • Exhibits safe and appropriate care in the use of firearms. Ability to operate firearms as specified by department’s firearm qualification/certification requirements per department’s Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Enforces parking regulations, directs traffic, investigates and prepares reports of traffic accidents and incidents.
  • Responds to and assists with medical emergencies.
  • Reacts to situations utilizing appropriate levels of force as required and within the department’s use of force procedures and policy.
  • Assists with money escorts for appropriate departments and provides for personal safety escorts as needed.
  • Investigates calls for service of a non-criminal nature, e.g., civil disputes, domestic disputes, parking space disputes, and determines appropriate action to be taken.
  • Maintains communication and rapport with a variety of groups within the college community to enhance the police image and instill a respect for law and order.
  • Communicates effectively in the English language. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in a variety of situations using verbal, auditory, visual, and writing skills. Requires the ability to project vocally to maintain order at disturbances, accidents, crime scenes, or over other background noises as needed. Performs radio communication skills. Communicates effectively with dispatch, supervisors, and other officers. Monitors radio to insure awareness of all unit status location and need for assistance.
  • Maintains and cleans department issued equipment and departmental vehicles. Inspects vehicles for safe and efficient operation; operates fuel pump and fills vehicle fuel tank; and exits vehicle quickly without assistance and operates vehicle in a safe and effective manner. Able to utilize fire extinguisher; change vehicle tire(s) if necessary.
  • Maintains current knowledge of all Department “Standard Operating Procedures”, “Rules and Regulations”, and “GCCC College Personnel Policies”.
  • Unlocks and secures appropriate buildings/rooms and facilities. Inspects buildings for illegal entry or criminal damage. Responds to and investigates alarm calls.
  • Assists pedestrians or motorists in need of assistance.
  • Attends classes or seminars that would enhance job knowledge and performance.
  • Participates in on-going department training activities to maintain levels of proficiency and annual forty-hour Kansas C-Post certification requirements.
  • Provides appropriate first aid, certified in CPR and AED principals.
  • Works the days and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks. Must be available (especially during regular business hours or shifts) to communicate with fellow employees, supervisors, the college community, and any other persons or organization with whom interaction is required to accomplish work and college goals.
  • Maintains knowledge of the college emergency response plan that utilizes the incident command system.
  • Ability to enter and retrieve data from department computers. Submits departmental reports for review and approval.
  • Understands and carries out oral and written directives.
  • Must be punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance, including, but not limited to, attendance standards and work deadlines, beginning and ending assignments on time and when reporting for duty.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned or as the situation dictates.

 

Postition Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum age 21.
  • U.S. citizen
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Must maintain an insurable driving record.
  • Must obtain certification as a Kansas Law Enforcement officer issued through the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center.  (Prefer applicant is certified through the State of Kansas)
  • Must successfully pass psychological exam and a criminal history background check prior to employment.
  • Maintain qualification and certification with firearm, Taser, and Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray.

Interpersonal Skills: Work normally involves contacts with persons beyond immediate associates generally regarding routine matters for purposes of giving or obtaining information which may require some discussion. Outside contacts take the form of service to the public (students, visitors or vendors) requiring ordinary courtesy in providing assistance and information.

Other Skills: Experience in security or related field is required. Computer skills are necessary (Microsoft Office products desired). Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills are necessary.   Some weekends/holidays. Working special events is required, as is working any shift needed.

Physical Requirements: The position generally requires light work with occasional lifting of 30 pounds or more, carrying equipment, varying amounts of sitting, climbing, kneeling, standing and walking.  Distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus is necessary.

Work Environment: Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office; however, there is occasional exposure to objectionable conditions or variations such as those found in variable weather conditions.
