Job Title: Code Enforcement Officer/Building Inspector
Responsible for the inspection of all residential and commercial building construction work to ensure that the safety codes of the City are followed. Respond to all reports and concerns from the public concerning potential code issues/violations. Enforce the codes concerning nuisances as adopted by the City. Assist the Community Development Director with projects as needed.
1. ADDRESS CODE VIOLATIONS- Inspect properties for violation of City’s nuisance, zoning, etc. codes on either a self-initiated basis or as a result of citizen/business complaint. Ensure compliance with all City ordinances. Report all code violations and actions taken to resolve issues to Community Development Director.
2. PERFORM BUILDING INSPECTIONS- Inspect all residential and commercial construction projects to ensure compliance with adopted building codes in the interest of public safety and quality construction.
3. REVIEW ARCHITECTURAL PLANS AND DRAWINGS- Review all architectural plans and drawings for residential and commercial construction projects prior to issuance of building permits.
4. SERVE AS LIAISON WITH EXTERNAL ORGANIZATIONS- Work collaboratively with external organizations when necessitated to ensure code compliance. Such organizations include, but are not limited to, Sedgwick County Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department, local law enforcement agencies, and local judge/court.
The responsibilities described above represent the primary responsibilities of the job. Other responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor as warranted by business needs. The incumbent is expected to fulfill all assigned responsibilities.
High school diploma or GED required. Typing and use of a personal computer with appropriate software required. Knowledge of building codes and construction systems required. Ability to read and analyze construction drawings and specifications and be knowledgeable of building progresses for visual inspections required. Possess ICC (International Code Council) Residential and Commercial Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, and Electrical Inspection certifications and valid state driver’s license. Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Previous work experience in the construction industry ranging from architectural experience, building and trades, or other code inspection work is highly preferred.
TOOLS & EQUIPMENT
Standard office equipment, including computer and fax/copy machine, building code books, architectural drawings, building inspection tools, and ladder.
The public, including permit applicants, contractors, code violators, architects/engineers, municipal court judges, City co-workers, and various local elected officials.
Work both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Some elements of building inspections may require climbing, bending, negotiating tight spaces, etc. There is an element of risk associated with this position.
