This is a professional staff position providing direct services to participants in the WIC program. The nurses provide nutrition education, community referrals, breastfeeding education and support. They are responsible for determining the client’s program eligibility based on nutritional/medical risk and assignment of the appropriate supplemental food package for qualifying women, infants and children.
Essential Job Functions:
Assessment: • Assigns nutrition risk for client eligibility. • Determines frequency and type of client follow-up appointments. • Uses goal setting and stage of change principles to assess client’s state of behavioral change. • Provides nutritional counseling to clients and families. • Accurately collects client’s medical data. Provides Education: • Uses motivational counseling methods. • Makes appropriate community and medical referrals. • Accurately reads immunization records. • Provides community outreach. • Provides breastfeeding education, promotion and support. • Prescribes appropriate WIC food package. Manage Record Keeping: • Authorizes and coordinates special formula issuance. • Schedules future WIC appointments appropriately for program requirements. • Completes documentation in the program software timely and thoroughly. • Meets program productivity standards. • Reports success stories. • Lead and or assist with a quality improvement process within the agency. • Follow HIPAA and WIC confidentiality policies and procedures. • Issues breast pumps and monitor return according to WIC policies and procedures. • Assists in the gathering of WIC data for the program’s performance indicators. • Follows WIC, County, and Division of Health policies and procedures. • Participates in the Blood borne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan that includes training, proof of hepatitis B immunity or vaccine, or vaccine series started within 10 days of employment. Provide proof of MMR, varicella, Tdap vaccinations, or immunity within 10 days of employment start date or within 10 days of start of employee health insurance. Participates in TB screening program that includes baseline screening for M. Tuberculosis infection within 10 days of employment. Follows Universal Precautions in performance of job. Transport blood and urine specimens from point of collection to point of testing. • This is a Tier 3 position; identified as personnel who in a public health emergency, have the potential to be deployed to the field to participate in the response, including personnel who are already assigned to a field location. Tier 3 staff are required to complete courses IS 100, 200 and 700 within 30 days of employment. Additional trainings may be required. • The following criteria will be determined at the time of advertising the vacancy and before hiring of new staff and will be based on the language interpreter/proficiency needs of the program. 1. To ensure the competence of individuals providing language assistance at the Division of Health, this position requires Spanish-English interpreter skills as determined by passing an interpreter test before hire. (National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services in Health and Health Care). 2. To ensure the competence of individuals providing language assistance at the Division of Health, this position requires fluency [or proficiency] in English and Spanish languages as determined by fluency [proficiency] test before hire. After hire, an employee who passes the test can speak directly to Spanish-speaking clients and can agree to take a medical interpreter skills test to interpret between Spanish-speaking clients and English-speaking staff members. Bilingual individuals in English and a non-English language can take a fluency [proficiency] test in non-English language. To ensure the competence of individuals providing language assistance at the Division of Health, only those who pass the test can use their non-English language with clients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). After hire, a bilingual employee who has passed the fluency or proficiency test can agree to take a medical interpreter skills test to interpret between a client with LEP and an English-speaking employee. • Associates degree in nursing required. • Must maintain a Registered Nurse license in the State of Kansas. • Bachelor’s degree in nursing is preferred. • 2 years of experience in women health and pediatrics preferred.
