The Animal Control Officer protects the public from disease or injury caused by animals and protects animals from improper use, abuse, neglect, or inhumane treatment. The Animal Control Officer performs animal control officer duties of enforcing county municipal codes regarding animals, capturing stray animals, returning animals to owners, collecting dead animals, and encouraging and educating responsible pet ownership to the residents of Sedgwick County.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Perform field work as an Animal Control Officer a. Captures animals that are running at large in the unincorporated areas of Sedgwick County including 2nd and 3rd class contract cities. b. Transports animals to the shelter for identification and admission. c. Prepares and maintains admission records on each animal admitted to the Wichita Animal Shelter. d. Returns owned animals to residents when applicable. e. Contains stray livestock f. Determines livestock ownership when applicable. g. May seize or transport livestock to holding facility or boarding facility until ownership is determined. h. Provides emergency medical care to injured animals. i. Transports the animal to veterinarian or emergency animal hospital when applicable.
2. Enforcement of county municipal code regarding animals. a. Issues warnings and citations to residents that are in violation of Sedgwick County animal code of ordinances b. Attends court hearings and may testify for violations of county animal code. c. Educate the public on county animal code ordinances and animal ownership.
3. Prepares and maintains animal control records and equipment a. Utilizes animal control software to record service calls, vaccination information, animal license requirement, bite investigations, resident history and animal history. b. Completes accurate documentation of service calls and resident interaction communication c. Completes live trap deposit. d. Completes receipt for live or deceased animal transports. e. Maintains animal control vehicle and equipment f. Completes animal control dispatcher duties as assigned.
1. This is a Tier 3 position; identified as personnel who, in a public health emergency, are activated to Incident Management System leadership and liaison roles and are deployed to the field in leadership positions. Tier 3 staff are required to complete courses IS 100, 200, and 700 within 30 days of employment. Additional ICS trainings may be required.
2. This is a Level 2 Driving position: Employee must maintain Kansas Driver’s License without driving restrictions.
3. Employee may be required to wear a respirator in emergency situations and for routine operations as requested. Employee will be enrolled in the respiratory protection program which includes an annual respirator medical evaluation and fit testing. 4. Participate in emergency on-call rotation.
REQUIRED: • High school diploma or equivalent • One year of experience in the humane and proper handling of animals as well as in dealing with the general public or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. • Meet Sedgwick County Level 2 driver qualifications. Have a valid Kansas Driver’s License or obtain one within 30 days of employment start date. PREFERRED: • Associates degree in animal sciences or criminal justice. • One year direct experience working in animal control or code enforcement or a combination of education and/or experience. • National Animal Control Association or National Animal Cruelty Investigation School certification.
