Job Objectives:
In the part time capacity be able to provide avanced emergency care, life support, and transportation in accordance with both KBEMS regulations and Sedgwick County Medical Society Protocol requirements. Will work under the direct supervision of a Sedgwick County EMS Crew Leader or Team Leader. Assists in the maintenance of assigned equipment, station, and vehicle

Essential Job Functions:
Stands by in readiness to respond to emergencies during a during assigned shift. Responds to emergency calls, assesses the situation and need for assistance, determines most effective method of emergency treatment, applies advanced life support or other appropriate treatment to victim(s)/patient(s), administers drugs, undertakes appropriate invasive procedures, advises hospital personnel of situation in a timely manner, and transports injured or ill to hospital for treatment. • Maintains accurate, complete, and timely records and files of patient care activities along with vehicle and station activities. Does so as to comply with all applicable local, state and federal regulations pertaining to EMS department operations. • Assures that all equipment both on the assigned ambulance and in the assigned post is in good working order, is clean and free of potentially infectious contaminates, and is present as outlined in department SOPs. Communicates within the chain of command in a timely and effective manner any found deficiencies such that these deficiencies can be corrected so as to not adversely impact the normal operations of the assigned unit. • Works with the public, medical professionals and others to educate and advise of the role, capabilities and responsibilities of a paramedic. Communicates effectively and professionally with all allied agencies and other system stakeholders during the course of assigned daily duties such that effective and efficient delivery of departmental services is provided. Communicates all pertinent issues related to any potential safety and/or regulatory violations in a timely manner to an immediate superior. • Works to maintain a safe work environment and minimize risk of injury to the incumbent, other EMS employees, patients, allied agencies, and other stakeholders. This will include all activities related to the operation of all county equipment, patient care activities, and any other EMS related tour of duty function.

Job Standards:
High School Diploma or equivalent. • Valid State of Kansas Driver’s License and meets the requirement of Sedgwick County Fleet Vehicle Operation and Usage Policy. • State of Kansas Paramedic Certification. • Applicant must be able to effectively communicate in English both written and oral form

Testing/Screening Requested:
Must posses a valid KS paramedic certification. Able to pass Physical / Drug screen

The following guidelines are used to describe the frequently of activities in this position: Occasionally equals 1 – 33%; frequently equals 34 – 66%; and continuously equals 67 – 100% of a typical work day.

• Standing/Walking – (Frequently to continuously). This usually includes going to and from the emergency vehicle, getting patients from their locations, and rending treatment. Most walking is for short distances; however, may include patients located inside large, multi-floored facilities. Surfaces including, but not limited to, asphalt, concrete, soft/packed dirt, hardwood or tile floors. The PARAMEDIC must be able to walk up/down slight elevation changes typical of roadsides and agricultural areas. Standing could last from several minutes to hours on the above mentioned surfaces.

• Sitting – (Frequently). The individual may be required to sit in a standard installed vehicle seat when responding to calls, traveling to a facility, or while filling temporary posting assignments. The time performing this activity will vary depending on the requirements of shift.

• Lifting and Carrying – (Frequently) The PARAMEDIC will be required to lift and carry weights ranging up to 10 pounds and above. (Occasionally) The PARAMEDIC will be required to lift and carry weights at 100 Lbs or more; this may include large adult patients to include lifting from various positions and lifting/carrying with various patient movement devices { ambulance cot, stair chair, long spine board}.

• Bending and Stooping: - (Frequently) during a work shift the PARAMEDIC will be required to bend in a range of 1 to 90 degrees. The average situation will require the individual to work in a range of 35 to 65 degree bends; lifting patients, equipment, treating a patient at ground level, sitting on a bench located in the ambulance. This activity may be of short duration up to 30 minutes or more.

• Crouching and Kneeling- (Frequently) crouching and kneeling may be performed several times per call when picking up patients and equipment. The actual number of times will vary depending on the call.

• Climbing – (Occasionally) this is required when climbing steps up/down with a patient transfer device (cot, soft-cot, LSB), and when entering/exiting the EMS vehicle.

• Reaching – (Frequently to continuously) During the work shift the employee may be required to reach with partial or full extension of the arms to operate equipment, drive the EMS vehicle, or provide patient care activities.

• Handling or Grasping – (Frequently to continuously) During the work shift the employee maybe required to open/close doors, lift, carry, or operate medical equipment weighing approximately 50 lbs or more; or patient transfer devices of various weights. Handling and grasping activities may also include pushing and pulling activities. The arm and hand must be able to perform all types of positions, including supination and pronation. Hyperextension, extension and flexion of the fingers will be involved.

• Hazards:  The employee maybe required to work outdoors in varying temperature extremes, during day and night shifts. The work is often preformed in emergency and stressful situations; including confined spaces, roadways, or other hazardous environments. The employee can be exposed to hazards associated with rendering emergency medical care, including smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, solvents, and oils. Use of personal protective equipment including masks or respirators, gloves, gowns, and extrication gear is required. The noise level of the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain emergency activities when noise levels may be loud. At all times the employee is expected to adhere to all applicable policies and procedures concerning safety and the prevention of contamination and infection due to Bloodborne pathogens.

Work Environment:
The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential and secondary functions of the job. The position requires significant physical strength and dexterity and the ability to function in adverse environments with exposure to numerous safety risks typically found at emergency scenes.
