Duties and responsibilities include enforcing all federal, state and local laws and ordinances; taking calls for service; patrolling business districts and residential neighborhoods to deter and detect crime; investigating complaints; citing and/or arresting law violators; following up on pending reports and cases; preparing and/or serving civil law processes; protecting person(s) or property; and securing and protecting prisoners.  When not responding to calls for service, department members are expected to use self-directed work time in an efficient manner by self-initiating work on those tasks identified by supervisory personnel as priorities for this job position.  Applicants must be able to perform these duties and responsibilities in a race and ethnicity neutral manner.


TYPE:     Full Time (rotating 12-hour shifts) DO NOT APPLY FOR PART-TIME.


SALARY:     Starting Salary for non-certified is $37,171/yr, current certified is $38,831 - $40,753/yr depending on experience.  Salaries are based on 12-hour shifts, 2,184 hours/yr.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:     Minimum qualifications include, high school or GED diploma, 21-years of age at time of appointment, no criminal record, possess a valid Kansas driver's license and able to pass; physical agility test, written aptitude test, polygraph, extensive background check, interview board, drug screen, physical and psychological testing.

Distinguishing Features of Work:      This is work training to perform the tasks required of a Police Officer for the City of Andover in the protection of life and property through enforcement of laws. Employees are responsible for learning local laws and ordinances and Andover Police Department policies and procedures for preventing crime, apprehending criminals, and enforcing laws, and general principles of police work. Training is provided by a variety of instructors. Individual performance is evaluated against established performance standards for written tests, role-play assessment, physical conditioning, and practical application and utilization of law enforcement equipment and methods.  As an Andover Police Officer you would be required to work weekends, holidays night shifts and or day shifts as directed by supervisory staff.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Must successfully complete training in areas including, but not limited to:
  • Answering calls and complaints involving automobile accidents and misdemeanor and felony cases.
  • Administering first aid, conducting preliminary investigations, gathering evidence, locating witnesses, making arrests, and taking arrestees to jail.
  • Interviewing persons with complaints or inquiries and making proper disposition or directing them to proper authorities.
  • Processing evidence, testifying as a witness in court, keeping records and making reports.
  • Using physical force effectively and appropriately.
  • Using firearms safely and accurately.

Requirements of Work:

•Ability to successfully complete required training within the time allowed.

•Ability to accurately discharge a rifle, shotgun, and handgun with both left and right hands.

•Ability to learn to subdue a violent and/or uncooperative person by methods requiring physical force.

•Ability to run distances up to one- and one-half miles without exhausting self.

•Must not be impaired from testifying credibly in a court of law or impaired from swearing to an affidavit.

•Ability to distinguish colors accurately.

•Visual acuity that meets established medical standards.

•Hearing ability that meets established medical standards.

•Ability to drag or carry an average adult person, about 150 pounds, a distance of fifteen yards, away from danger.

•Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.

•Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

•Ability to wear body armor while on duty.

•Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and the public.

•Ability to operate an automobile and to maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.

•An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Applicants will be eliminated from the process if they have falsified, intentionally misrepresented, or have not been completely truthful or have not fully disclosed ALL information requested on a questionnaire, document, or application in any part of the pre-employment process.

  • Applicants must satisfy all requirements as set forth in Kansas Statute 74-5605 (must be a Citizen of the United States, must be at least 21 years of age on the date of hire, must be the holder of a high school diploma or equivalent achievement, i.e. GED, is of good moral character and free of any physical or mental condition which might adversely affect the applicant’s performance as a police officer.)

  • Applicants must satisfy all requirements as set forth by the City of Andover (applicant must not have a tattoo or brand, other than cosmetic tattoos, that would be visible to the public while on-duty in uniform or in civilian attire.  Applicants with tattoos that are visible must agree as a condition of employment, that they would remove or cover the tattoo whenever on duty.)

  • If military service has been rendered your DD214 must reflect a separation code and an honorable discharge or a discharge under honorable conditions.

  • No convictions for any misdemeanor crimes involving morals, drugs, or weapon charges in the past five years.

  • Must not have used, bought, possessed, sold or assisted in the distribution of marijuana in the past two years.

  • Must not have used, bought, possessed, sold or assisted in the distribution of illegal or non-prescriptive steroids in the past three years.

  • Must not have used, bought, possessed, sold or assisted in the distribution of any felony level drug or controlled substance, i.e. cocaine, heroin, LSD, ecstasy, fentanyl, hashish, mushrooms; opium, methamphetamine, etc. in the past 10 years.

  • No convictions or involvement of any misdemeanor crimes of violence, or use of physical force or threats, during the past five years.

  • Has not been convicted, does not have an expunged conviction, and has not been placed on diversion by any state or federal government for a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or its equivalent under the uniform code of military justice, when such misdemeanor crime of domestic violence was committed on or after May 22, 1997.

  • No convictions or involvement in misdemeanor property crimes within the past three years.

  • May not have been convicted of, plead guilty or not contest to, or been diverted on a serious traffic violation within the past five years.  Serious traffic violations to include, but not limited to DUI, reckless driving, hit and run, vehicular homicide, and eluding a police officer.

  • May not have been convicted of, plead guilty or no contest to or been diverted on no more than two moving traffic violations within the past year.

  • No convictions, diversions or expungments of any felony crime including juvenile offenses.

  • Must not be currently charged with or under indictment of any criminal activity other than minor traffic violations.

  • As an adult or juvenile may not have a conviction, diversion or expungments of a crime involving an act of dishonesty, include but not limited to theft, fraud, false police reports etc.

  • If previous law enforcement experience has been rendered, must not have received discipline for a  sustained violation of dishonesty to include but not limited to, lying, falsifying reports or documents, illegally obtaining narcotics, courtroom testimony/credibility.

  • Applicants with background under Brady/Giglio rulings will not be considered.
