Junction City, incorporated in February 1859, is the county seat of Geary County and neighbor to Fort Riley. Junction City became a city of the first class on January 1, 1962. The 2010 U.S. Census showed a population of 23,353. It is anticipated that the population of Junction City will increase to approximately 30,000 in the next five years due to the change in mission of Fort Riley. Junction City is located in north central Kansas on I-70 in the heart of the Flint Hills of Kansas. We enjoy four distinct seasons with sports, recreation and active community life year round.
Junction City has a “city commission / city manager” form of municipal government. Voters elect a five-member commission on an at-large basis. Three commissioners are elected every two years. The City Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the city and is responsible for the hiring and supervising of the City’s employment force. Citizens actively participate in civic activities, volunteering on over 20 boards and commissions.
The City has over 265 year-round full time and part time employees. The number of employees increases to approximately 300 during the summer months. Each employee is responsible for providing the services citizens expect on a daily basis. The city contracts with Veolia Water for the operation and maintenance of the city’s water treatment plant and the two waste water treatment plants.
Junction City is the home the Junction City Brigades, our home team, played their first season in historic Rathert Stadium with a winning record. The minor league atmosphere, promotions and games, the Beer Garden and great ticket prices add up to great family fun in Junction City.
Recreation is a vital part of our community. Recreation facilities include fourteen parks, a swimming pool that includes a new spray park, a municipal auditorium, arts center, a community theater and a four-start PGA rated 18-hole golf course. Geary County State fishing lake, located in the heart of the Flint Hills, is just eight miles south of Junction City. Milford Reservoir is located approximately five miles from the City. This 16,000-acre lake offers year round recreational activities, including hunting, fishing, water sports and camping.
Historic Downtown Junction City is a model for the preservation of native limestone buildings and historic structures. A short walk through the downtown area will give visitors a glimpse in the community’s past and its commitment to the future. Renovation of two landmarks, the Opera House and the Bartell, will make our downtown a historic architectural showcase.
Junction City Unified School District #475 operates fourteen elementary schools, two middle schools, a freshman academy and one high school in Junction City with a full time equivalent enrollment of around 6,500. Cloud County Community College and Barton County Community College have facilities located in the City. The Manhattan Area Vocational Technical School and Kansas State University are both approximately 14 miles from the City.
