City of Wellington
The City of Wellington, known as the Wheat Capital of the World, is located in south central Kansas twenty-three miles south of Wichita. Wellington was first surveyed on April 4, 1871 and named for the Duke of Wellington. It was designated as the permanent seat of Sumner County in 1872. Trading with cattlemen moving their herds up the Chisholm Trail was an important factor in the early economy of the town. The population of the city, based on the 2000 census, is 8,647.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Generally, an applicant for a permanent position may not be related to a current employee in the hiring department if either relative will have, in the judgment of the City Manager, direct influence over the working conditions and/or wages of the other relative. A relative is defined as spouse, parent, child, sibling, and grandparent or grandchild related by blood or legal adoption. Only when it appears, in the opinion of the City Manager, that no other qualified applicant is available for hire will such employment be allowed.
Drug Free Workplace
The City of Wellington is committed to a Drug-Free Workplace. We conduct pre- and post- employment drug testing. Applicants, who refuse to be tested, test positive, or tamper with the test will not be eligible for employment. Completion of an application does not constitute an employment contract or an offer of employment.
Position requirements shall determine whether or not an employee may live outside the City limits, and the City Manager shall have discretion in determining which positions require residency, and if residency is required, for the time limit to establish it.
At Will Employment
Employment with the City of Wellington is considered “at-will”. Nothing contained within the City’s applications, advertisement process, or the personnel manual constitute an employment contract.
