Purpose:    The Director of Communication facilitates an open exchange of information between Andover Public Schools and our stakeholders. The Director is responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive and dynamic communication strategy for the district and serves as the creative architect for all internal and external marketing and communication initiatives. The Director also manages all district level electronic social communications and general front desk operations.

Qualifications:    Director of Communication:    

  1. Bachelor’s degree.

  2. A minimum of three years experience in the field of marketing and communications. Experience in education marketing is preferred.

  3. Exhibit a personality that demonstrates interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents, media and the community.

  4. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, including social media.

Performance Responsibilities:

  1. Continue implementing the marketing/communication plan that advances the Andover Public Schools, manages our brand and drives increased engagement with our stakeholders.

  2. Set annual objectives for the district’s marketing/communication plan, establish metrics to measure progress and report progress to district stakeholders.

  3. Coordinate media relations and outreach, including crisis planning and response as well as district safety efforts.

  4. Serve as first point of contact and liaison between the district and news media, supervise the production and distribution of all news releases.

  5. Coordinate community relations by maintaining open lines of communication with community organizations.

  6. Manage the Communications Budget

  7. Develop general and specialized publications inclusive of but not limited to: recruitment and informational packets/brochures, weekly employee newsletter, continually promote district achievements and upcoming events and community newsletter mailed three times a year.

  8. Design and continually update layouts for school system publications, forms and other print material.

  9. Plan for, deploy and coordinate district digital activities including the district website and other social media communications.

  10. Maintain and regularly update a file of community organizations and their officers contact information.

  11. Serve as liaison with potential students and their families, coordinating tours of buildings, providing information about the district and promoting the district to newcomers to assist them in decision-making as to school selection.

  12. Make presentations to various groups regarding district activities.

  13. Develop, plan and coordinate activities related to school closings and/or scheduling modifications including media and community notifications.

  14. Coordinate and supervise the operations of the Communications Assistant/Receptionist.

  15. Stay current with professional practices in the field of public information/relations by participating in the national and state School Public Relations Association organizations.

  16. Serve as communications consultant to district staff.

  17. Advise the Superintendent on probable public relations consequences relating to changes in existing programs and policies.

  18. Work with Superintendent’s office to provide prompt responses to requests for public information about the district, its policies and its programs.

  19. Work with Superintendent, BOE and committees in various phases of bond issue projects for the school district.

  20. Work with Superintendent’s office to coordinate district celebrations, events, programs and other special activities.

  21. Work with Superintendent’s office to promote a customer service mentality across the entire district.

  22. Work with Superintendent’s office to coordinate all district calendars.

  23. Work with Superintendent’s office in the gathering of information for periodic polling of public opinion regarding district or current issues.

  24. Serve on the Superintendent’s Advisory Team

  25. Serve on a variety of district committees as required.

  26. Perform other duties as assigned.
