Job Description:

Position Summary

            Under the supervision of the wastewater plant superintendent, the wastewater maintenance worker I performs skilled and semi-skilled labor in the maintenance and operation of the plant facilities.  This employee assists in the day-to-day operations and maintenance of wastewater facilities and sewer lines to insure compliance with treatment standards set by the state of Kansas and Department of Health and Environment. 

Examples of Work

*   Continual learning of the wastewater treatment process and maintenance and repair of al lift stations, sewer lines and related equipment;

*   Assists in the proper maintenance, repair and startup/shutdown procedures for all pumps, mixers and the UV system within the wastewater treatment facility;

*   Operates equipment including pumps, motors and related machinery, as well as vac-bed, belt press, barr-screen, grit removal and SCADA system;

*   Learning the operation and maintenance of the rodder machine;

*   Assists in repairs and replacement of manhole covers and sewer lines;

*   Helps with mowing, weed-eating, painting, spraying and in general cleaning and care of all wastewater plant facilities;

*   Supports other departments on projects;

*   Other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.

Experience:  One to three years of wastewater operator experience is preferred.  Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six months in the position.

Education:  High school diploma or GED required.  Have and maintain a Class B driver’s license.  Requires a Class I Wastewater Treatment Certification by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment after one year in the position.

Skills:  General knowledge of wastewater testing equipment, materials and monitoring requirements.  General knowledge of chemicals and gases.  Ability to operate pumps, rodder machine, backhoe, front-end loader, generators, air blowers and other department equipment.

Problem Solving:  Limited problem solving exists in this position.  Employee performs maintenance of equipment and makes adjustments to plant facilities based on the results of tests to with health standards and safety requirements.

Decision-Making:  Limited decision making is a factor in this position.  Tasks are of a routine nature and are performed independently.

Accountability:  Employee is not responsible for budgetary control of an area within the department and does not participate in the annual departmental budgetary process. 

Supervision:  Occasional supervision is provided by wastewater superintendent.  Job related decisions are reviewed occasionally.   Employee does not have supervisory responsibility over subordinate personnel.

Personal Relations:  Occasional contact with other city departments and the general public.

Residency:  The employee working in this position is required to reside within Anderson County.

Working Conditions:  Adverse weather conditions, working with chemicals, toxic fumes and exposure to materials which could contain communicable diseases and manual labor are factors in this position.
