Job Description:



The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform a variety of standard chemical and bacteriological tests on raw and treated water or sewage. Responsibilities include gathering samples, performing tests using standard laboratory equipment, and cleaning and sterilizing laboratory utensils and equipment.  The Laboratory Technician monitors, tests and interprets laboratory data pertinent to the effluent discharge from the wastewater plant, as well as, plant process control.  The KDHE and the EPA set laboratory standards.  Work is performed under the supervision of the Wastewater Services Director and/or Wastewater Services Supervisor.  


  • Performs a wide variety of chemical tests on water or effluent samples;
  • Conducts routine bacteriological examinations of water and wastewater samples;
  • Collects water or sewage samples from representative points throughout the City utility system;
  • Prepares laboratory equipment and media used in the chemical analysis of samples, and performs routine chemical tests;
  • Cleans and sterilizes laboratory equipment utensils and facilities;
  • Performs mathematical calculation and statistical analysis for test results;
  • Prepares reports on results of lab tests;
  • Prepares monthly monitoring report to KDHE and other reports as required;
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality customer service.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:

  • Elementary principles, practices, and techniques of microbiology, bacteriology and chemistry.
  • Quality assurance procedures in laboratory of water and sample collection procedures.
  • General principles and procedures of wastewater treatment and wastewater collection.
  • Basic computer operation, including spreadsheets and work processing.
  • The operation and care of standard chemical laboratory equipment.

Ability to:

  • Perform standard chemical, microbiological, and bacteriological tests accurately and evaluate results.
  • Maintain records accurately and neatly.
  • Work with limited supervision and exercise sound judgment.
  • Follow oral and written instructions in the English language exactly and prepare simple written reports in the English language on the results of laboratory tests performed.
  • Perceive the full range of the color spectrum and perform extensive microscopic work.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.


Work Environment:

  • Lab Environment; exposure to computer screens.
  • Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; extensive use of computer keyboard.
  • Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less).
  • Move light objects (less than 20 pounds) long distances (more than 20 feet).
  • Travel across rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
  • Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time.
  • Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
  • Lift arms above shoulder level.
  • Climb ladders or steps to reach objects.

Additional Requirements:

  • Certification associate’s degree in chemical, physical or environmental sciences or two years equivalent and successful college education with a minimum of 16 college semester credit hours in chemistry or be a KDHE Certified Class IV operator with laboratory experience.
  • Two (2) years laboratory experience preferred, but not required.
  • Laboratory work includes BOD5, COD, PH, DO, TSS, TS, Volatile Acids, Ammonia, Chlorides, E-coli, Priority Pollutants, Microscopics, Proficiency Testing, training assistants and laboratory reports.
  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
  • Some positions will require the performance of other essential or marginal functions depending upon work assignment, location, or shift.


Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
