Job Objectives:

The Medical Reimbursement Specialist is responsible for actively participating in the Billing Compliance Program through:  investigating and responding to questions regarding documentation and coding issues, participating in the claims review process, providing documentation and compliance educational sessions to physicians and other staff, overseeing billing dictionary updates related to CPT and ICD-10 coding, and conducting inpatient and outpatient chart reviews.  He/she will work closely with the Health Information Supervisor, the Finance Department and Assistant Director, to ensure that communication regarding documentation and reimbursement issues is timely, accurate and complete.

Essential Job Functions:

Investigate, respond to and communicate information regarding Departmental coding, documentation, compliance and reimbursement questions.  Compile and analyze data, assist in identifying appropriate codes for services and support, provide analysis for and advise management regarding revenue and reimbursement issues.  Work with the finance department to perform research and provide recommendations on fees and the use of procedure codes in a timely manner.  Analyze coding issues/questions from both a compliance and reimbursement perspective.  Provide compliance/documentation education to providers and staff as requested.  Provide accurate and up-to-date information on regulatory and reimbursement requirements.  Provide coding expertise for all compliance and reimbursement issues.  Perform chart reviews for services billed.  Consult with provider for clarification of clinical data when ambiguous information is encountered.  Participate in the rejections and claims review process to ensure both compliance and maximization of appropriate department reimbursement.  Participate as an active member of both Departmental Quality Assurance and Compliance initiatives for the department.  Contribute to Quality Improvement initiatives and performance measurement system.  Coordinate with other agencies and institutions, particularly in the development and process of special projects.  Perform community engagement as needed on behalf of the agency.  Provide direct services if needed in program areas.  Represent the agency on occasions at local or state meetings or events.  Keep Director informed appropriately, regarding unusual or significant matters.

Job Standards:

BA/BS preferred.  Knowledge of medical terminology and proficiency with diagnosis and CPT-4coding highly preferred.  Experience in a medical related field (public health billing experience highly preferred).  Proficiency with third party billing and documentation standards, particularly the Evaluation and Management codes is essential.  Proficiency in reading inpatient and outpatient medical records and billing.  Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) system preferred.

Testing/Screening Requested:

Must pass a pre-employment Physical Capacity Profile and Drug Screen.

Equipment:

Operate all job related machinery, equipment, tools and other aids as required, necessary, or needed in the performance of these job functions.

Work Environment:

Incumbent must be willing to receive vaccinations for communicable diseases, as necessary and appropriate.  Incumbent may be required to travel.
