Under the supervision of the Street/Sanitation Superintendent, the Automotive Technician performs skilled Automotive Technical and/or mechanical work on a variety of vehicles, equipment and machinery. The main responsibility of this position is to repair and maintain, in good operating order, all emergency and non-emergency vehicles and fleet equipment owned by the City. The employee in this position performs facility maintenance and some records maintenance. May control a spare parts inventory.

Experience: One year of related automotive, heavy truck, construction equipment repair or farming equipment experience required. Two to four years of vehicle/equipment maintenance and repair experience is preferred. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job after 6 months in the position. Possession of a valid Class B commercial driver’s license with tank endorsement.

Education: High school diploma or GED required. Possession of associates degree or ASE certification for Automotive & Light Duty Truck (A1-A8) and/or Medium & Heavy-Duty Truck (T1-T8) preferred, or exceptionally strong work record combined with continuing training certifications. Ability to obtain continuing training in related field.

Skills: Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics and technical service on light and heavy-duty vehicles. Thorough knowledge of tools and diagnostic equipment. The ability to troubleshoot malfunctions and make repairs. The ability to operate all City owned vehicles and machinery. Ability to use a computer


The successful candidate must pass a background check, physical and drug screen upon conditional offer of employment.
