Job Description:

Job Objectives:

Provides daily care for assigned animals including but not limited to: feeding, cleaning, observing, recording, and reporting behavior. Interacts and provides customer service to all zoo defined customers.

 

Essential Job Functions:

Animal Care and Management

  • Demonstrates and maintains knowledge of basic natural history and behavior.
  • Effectively and timely communicates to supervisors all observations of animal behavior and health conditions.
  • Handle animals for medical purposes and in preparation for transport.
  • Prepares animal diets which may vary widely among taxa.

Animal Welfare

  • Through consultation with supervisors and other resources maintains and develops a skillset of animal training, enrichment and welfare.
  • Record animal training and enrichment observations and health conditions in daily records.

Area Maintenance

  • Clean and maintain service areas, animal habitats and public viewing areas. Areas are to be clean, organized and free of clutter. Public areas are to be clean, presentable and aesthetically pleasing for zoo defined customers.
  • Uses wheel barrows, rakes, shovels, hoses, scrub brooms, tubs and a variety of other tools.
  • Ensures that habitats are ready for public display in a timely manner.

Job Standards:

Minimum Qualifications

Educational Requirements:  Coursework from an accredited college or university or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities

License, certifications, etc… Valid State of Kansas Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications

Educational Requirements:  One to two years coursework in Zoology or Biology from an accredited college or university.

Years of Experience:  6 months to 1 year zoo practicum experience in an AZA facility

 

Physical Requirements of Position:

  • Climbing. Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.
  • Stooping. Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Lifting. Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • .Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving animals and their habitats using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication of exhibits. The employee is required to have visual acuity to determine the health and record behavior and to make general animal observations.
  • The employee is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.

 

Equipment:

Wheel barrows, rakes, shovels, hoses, scrub brooms, tubs, food preparation equipment, motor vehicle, animal care equipment, and office equipment

 

Work Environment:

Usual working days/hours:  19.75 hours per week

Location of work:  North American Prairie - Mammals

The employee is subject to activities that occur in both inside and outside environmental conditions.  The employee is subject to potential hazards of working near dangerous animals.
