Job Title: PT Intake & Assessment Officer
Salary: $14.47 Hourly
Performs routine work carrying out the intake and assessment procedures for clients brought to the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center (JIAC) within the Division of Corrections (DOC) and monitors clients while in the facility.
Essential Job Functions:
50% - Intake & Assessment - Interviews clients utilizing motivational interviewing skills. Completes intake portion of database when law enforcement presents clients for assessment; completes fingerprinting, mug shots, and as necessary, DNA. Enters accurate demographic information into the database. Creates and/or modifies records in database, demonstrates high quality writing and proofreading skills; ensures timely completion of records, and accurately files records.
30% - Case Management - Provides short-term crisis counseling to families to ensure the safe release of clients. Conducts family conferences to affect a safe and positive release with referrals to address issues identified during the assessment interview. Provides inter-agency collaboration by sending required information to the District Attorney and social agencies; sets bonds and court dates for municipal charges, sets detention hearing dates, pulls adhoc information requests for agencies, creates/distributes daily reports.
15% - Supervisor Extender - Relieves the shift supervisor of routine tasks and reporting of shift activity, when needed. Assists in the training of team members and serves as a resource person for law enforcement to answer questions about JIAC processes.
5% - Performs related work as required.

Interpersonal Skills: Has good listening skills, builds strong relationships, is flexible/open-minded, interacts effectively with clients / family / agencies.
Detail Orientated: Ensures information is complete and accurate; follows up with others to ensure that information has been conveyed. Follows process steps as outlined in standard operating procedures. Reviews materials to ensure they are accurate, clear and concise. Performs follow-up to ensure quality of work product and/or actions are completed.
Teamwork: Participates as an active and contributing member of a team to achieve program goals. Works cooperatively with other team members, involves others, and shares information as appropriate.
Educational Requirements: Associates of Arts (AA) in criminal justice, psychology, sociology or a closely related field or course work equal to two years of college (60+ earned credit hours). Transcript verifying education credits is required.
License, certifications, etc.… Professional references are required to verify the related work experience. Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age. Dependable and timely attendance is required. Possess a valid Driver’s License and good driving record that meets the requirement of Sedgwick County Fleet Vehicle Operation and Usage Policy. Personal vehicle for use when county vehicle is not available (employee reimbursement is provided by County). Proof of liability insurance on personal vehicle. Must possess first aid, CPR and physical restraint certification or the ability to acquire within initial period of employment. Pass legal background check, Child and Adult Abuse & Neglect Central Registry checks, KCJIS Security Policy (fingerprint) check, and pre-employment screen for alcohol and drugs. Must also meet the required conditions contained in KSA 65-516 and KAR 28-4-356.
Educational Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, psychology, sociology or related field
Years of Experience: Two years’ experience working with youth and families. Professional references are required to verify the related work experience.
Physical Requirements of Position:
- Requires sufficient strength and coordination in the ability to apprehend and restrain violent clients; assist in carrying the weight of a restrained client; and defend one’s self from attack.
- Ability to endure verbal and mental abuse when confronted with the hostile views and opinions of clients.
- Requires ability and knowledge to operate basic office machines, such as personal computer, fax, copy machine, etc.
- Requires sufficient hand-eye coordination to perform semi-skilled repetitive movements such as keyboarding and operating basic office machines, such as a personal computer, fax, copy machine, two-way radio, etc.
- Requires the ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- Requires ability to use first aid, CPR and physical restraint when necessary.
- Tasks involve visual perception and discrimination as well as oral communications ability.
- Requires bending, color identification, gripping hands and fingers, hearing voice conversations, keyboarding, occasional lifting/carrying light to moderately heavy objects, operating passenger vehicle, pulling, pushing, reaching, running, rapid stair climbing, sitting, standing and walking for long periods.
PC, general office equipment, and two-way radio
Usual working days/hours: Monday AND Thursday, 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Location of work: 700 S Hydraulic
Work is performed primarily indoors in a corrections setting. Management may change the facility assignment as needed to respond to changing conditions. Must be available to work varied days and shifts, including weekends and holidays. Work may be conducted in a noisy, crowded area, with possible exposure to chemicals, solvents, grease, oils, inks, illnesses, diseases, blood borne pathogens, allergens, etc.
