Job Objectives:

Performs general public health nursing services or provides skilled nursing services in a home environment.

Essential Job Functions:

Counsels with clients, parents, or caregivers and refers to physicians, dentists, or other community agencies for needed health services.  Asks questions to determine client’s medical history and needs, including physical, mental, social and environmental; assesses client’s physical systems and implements nursing care plan.  Documents assessments and care given; evaluates progress and records findings according to established policies and procedures.  Communicates with client’s physician as needed.  Performs general public health nursing services in a variety of areas to include:  immunizations, tuberculosis testing, tuberculosis treatment and monitoring, family planning, sexually transmitted infection screening and treatment, multiphasic preschool screening, prenatal and postpartum counseling and care, cancer screening, diet counseling, foot clinic, and other services.  May make regular home visits and carries out nursing services as directed.  Assesses client’s physical condition and prepares care plan, including the need for personal care services; reviews at least quarterly and makes changes as needed.  May conduct reportable disease investigations for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.  Maintains accurate records, including all documentation requirements, and prepares required epidemiological and STI reports.  Promotes, conducts or participates in educational services and workshops which promote public/home health awareness, methods and procedures.  Encourage, support and educate prenatal and postpartum women in breastfeeding.  May clinically assist physician/nurse practitioner.  May monitor school immunization records and assist with school located vaccine clinics.  May assist with off-site influenza/vaccination clinics in the community.  Participates in maintain current standards of public health nursing practices by attending workshops.  Attends all staff and in-service meetings as well as weekly care planning conferences.  Assess immunization records and determines necessary and appropriate vaccinations needed, and administers those per policy.  May do Kan-Be-Health exams and makes appropriate referrals as needed.  May assist environment health in the investigation of animal bites, conducts client interviews and offers referral information when needed.  Cross train as needed between programs in the Health Department.  

Job Standards:

B.S.N. preferred.  Two (2) year Associate Degree Nursing Graduate.  Must have a current license to practice nursing in the State of Kansas.  Must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license.  Employee is responsible for obtaining and maintaining all certification requirements, including license renewal.  Requires a minimum of one (1) year experience in public health, medical/surgical, or pediatric nursing.

Testing/Screening Requested:

Must pass a pre-employment Physical Capacity Profile and Drug Screen at the Hutchinson Clinic.


Operate all job related machinery, equipment, tools and other aids as required, necessary, or needed in the performance of these job functions.

Work Environment:

Most work is performed indoors.  May be required to drive in inclement weather.  Surroundings at times may be noisy.  Possible exposure to communicable diseases.  On occasion may be exposed to spills of blood or body fluids.  Home environments may lack proper heating and cooling equipment.  In home assignments may require exposure to smoking environment.  Must pay close mental and visual attention during all aspects of medical services.
