Job Title: Equipment Operator IV
Salary: $18.63 Hourly
The City of Newton is looking for a highly skilled, heavy construction and street maintenance equipment operator. The perfect candidate will have an eye for detail and previous experience in pavement excavation, road/ditch grading and/or other street maintenance work. If this is you, please apply!
The position of Equipment Operator IV within the Street Department will operate heavy equipment and machinery on a daily basis, but will also be expected to perform various manual labor tasks associated with street maintenance. The capacity to multitask and work efficiently will be necessary. Light maintenance experience is a plus. In this role, the employee will have constant exposure to citizens and adverse weather conditions while working. Occasionally, this position will be required to respond to after hour emergencies to provide remedial services.
Much of the day to day actives of this position include:
- Operation of heavy equipment and machinery (i.e. high loader, back hoe, motor grader, slurry sealer)
- Patching pavement/ sealing cracks and applying surface treatments to pavements
- Grading gravel roads and alleyways
- Cleaning road ditches and drainage channels
- Finishing concrete
- Conducting sign and traffic signal maintenance
- Storm clean up
- Removing snow and ice/ laying salt and sand as conditions require
- Placing devices used for traffic control
Experience: One to three years of heavy equipment experience is required. Some lead or supervisory experience preferred. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six months in the position. Requires a Class B commercial driver's license with air brake and tank endorsements.
Education: High school diploma or GED preferred.
Skills: Thorough knowledge of the operation, maintenance and safety guidelines of equipment used. Ability to operate a high loader, back hoe, slurry machine, motor grader, dump truck and all street maintenance heavy equipment and machinery. Good knowledge of street maintenance and repair methods. Ability to do welding, form setting and concrete finishing. Ability to use a variety of hand tools, power tools and small motorized equipment.
Residency Requirement: Must live within 20 miles of intersection of First & Main streets, Newton, KS.
The successful candidate must pass a background check, physical and drug screen upon conditional offer of employment.
