DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK

Under general supervision of the Director, Electric Utilities, the Mechanic performs skilled mechanical work in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of medium and heavy duty vehicles and equipment such as buses, refuse trucks, graders, tractors, sweepers and heavy duty trucks and performs related work as required. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Diagnoses problems and determines the extent of repairs or adjustments and makes repairs needed for light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment
  • Maintains, adjusts, repairs, rebuilds and overhauls operating systems including, but not limited to, electrical, charging, starting, fuel, ignition, cooling, air conditioning, heating, suspension, braking, steering and hydraulic systems
  • Maintains, adjusts, repairs, rebuilds and overhauls components such as engines, transmissions, drive shafts, differentials, air brakes, radiators and bodies
  • Builds and fabricates special bodies, housing, brackets and accessories using machining tools and equipment
  • Prepares/enters repair orders and keeps maintenance records of time spent, materials and parts used and type of work performed in automated system
  • Organizes, cleans and maintains workshop area
  • May drive vehicles into and out of service bays and perform road tests
  • Demonstrate skill in the use of tools and equipment such as valve machining equipment, brake lathe, engine analyzer, battery, starter, cooling system and voltage testers
  • Read and understand maintenance and specification manuals
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Communicate and work effectively with co-workers

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Licensure, or Certification

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Prefer satisfactory completion of courses in the repair of heavy-duty vehicles and equipment including hydraulic, electrical, fuel systems, engine and transmission overhaul.

Experience, Specialized Knowledge, and Other Requirements

  • Five years of recent skilled mechanical experience, at least one year of which includes servicing and repair of heavy-duty vehicles and equipment
  • Methods, tools, materials, equipment and procedures used in the diagnosis, overhaul, repair and adjustment of components and systems for medium and heavy duty vehicles and equipment
  • Operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines and fuel injection systems
  • Mechanical, electrical, electronic and hydraulic systems
  • Overhaul procedures related to transmissions, brakes and rear axles
  • Techniques, procedures, mechanical tune-up, smog testing, repair and maintenance practices
  • Safety rules and precautions related to the use of tools, vehicles and equipment

  • Has ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as sitting, standing, walking, bending, climbing, twisting, squatting, crouching, reaching overhead, grasping, lifting, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling and handling of objects
  • Has ability to frequently lift, push, pull and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Has ability to occasionally lift in excess of 50 pounds with assistance
  • Has normal eyesight and depth perception, with or without correction
  • Hears normal tones, with or without correction
  • Has ability to work within environment described below

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions, including temperature extremes.  The employee may regularly be exposed to water, fumes, dirt, and chemicals.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; can occasionally be loud.
