Job Description:

The Sedgwick County Fire District is recruiting for Full-Time (FT) and Part-Time (PT) Firefighters.   

The Firefighter Academy will begin approximately August 13th, 2018 and last 12 weeks.   During the three (3) month Academy all new recruits will be initially hired as FT with benefits and work 56 hours per week (12 hour shifts M-Th & 8 hours on Friday).   At the conclusion of the Academy, five (5) firefighters will be moved to PT non-benefitted positions and five (5) will remain in FT status.  

The part-time firefighters will be limited to one 24 hr. shift a week, up to 1000 hours annually; and may be offered full-time status in the future as openings occur within the department. 

At the moment that job offers are made (following the testing and interview), each new recruit will be informed if they are selected for one of the five FT positions or one of the five PT positions. 

Job Objectives:

Performs firefighting work in the protection of life and property by combating, extinguishing fires under emergency conditions which involves personal hazard.  Recognizes, maintains, and ability to utilize firefighting and medical tools/equipment/apparatus in a safe/effective/efficient manner.  Studies emergency response methods/techniques and performs routine work in the maintenance of firefighting equipment, apparatus and quarters.   Implements EMT level medical care to patients, unaccompanied or under the guidance of an Officer.    Involved in mitigating other emergency incidents such as Hazardous Material, Rescue, Natural Disaster, and etc.   A Firefighter will contribute in community events, fire prevention activities, public education activities, fire report completion, cleaning of stations, and other daily demands.

Essential Job Functions:

Responsibility for Checking Emergency Response Apparatus, Equipment on Apparatus, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), while Exhibiting a Teamwork Attitude.

  • Performs a wide variety of cleaning, maintenance and testing functions of fire apparatus and equipment such as checking fluid levels, pressures and operations of horns and sirens, etc.; ensures vehicles and equipment are maintained in compliance with standard operating procedures and department regulations; informs supervisor of mechanical repairs and maintenance work needed.
  • Checks PPE and self-contained breathing apparatus, resuscitation equipment and other equipment used by rescue companies; cleans firefighting equipment oils and cleans fire trucks, washes and cleans fire house.
  • Assures computer is working and all personnel logged into the system.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow workers.

Responds to Emergency Events with Life Safety, Incident Stability, and Property Conservation being the priorities. 

  • Fights fires to protect property and save lives; drives at high speeds and safely to arrive at scenes in a safe manner; operates fire apparatus; connects and lays hose lines from a water source and figures friction loss and nozzle pressure; aims hose to spray water to confine and extinguish the fire seat; performs search and rescue operations to remove people that are trapped by fire; ventilates structure to get smoke and fire gases out of structure; performs salvage and overhaul operations.
  • Provides basic life support and EMT level medical treatment; recognizes the patient’s illness or injury by interpreting symptoms; splints injuries, performs CPR, treats burns, ventilates and documents and maintains accurate records of all medical treatment provided.
  • Performs various activities after fire is controlled; removes burned debris and ensures fire is out; prevents rekindle; ensures that walls or structures are not in danger of falling; secures building by covering broken windows and holes in roof; guides occupants to agencies providing disaster assistance.
  • May perform Hazardous Material mitigation, Rescue and protection activities; identifies hazardous materials such as acid, flammable liquids, radioactive materials, poison, bacteria, etc.; determines and implements method of protection, containment, evacuation and decontamination; maintains vehicles, equipment and supply inventory; records all equipment used at a scene; ensures compliance with OSHA, EPA and Fire Protection Agency regulations and standards and provides training on same.
  • Works in environments that could cause health related issues, these environments are:  high heat, carcinogenic smoke, chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, explosive, medical related viruses/bacteria’s and etc…

Continues to Enhance Personal Knowledge, both Cognitive and Psych-Motor Skills, while Still Performing Daily Requirements at the Fire Station and other Locations.

  • Performs a wide variety of cleaning, maintenance and testing functions of fire apparatus and equipment such as checking fluid levels, pressures and operations of horns and sirens, etc.; ensures vehicles and equipment are maintained in compliance with standard operating procedures and department regulations; informs supervisor of mechanical repairs and maintenance work needed.
  • Inspects buildings in assigned area for the purpose of noting occupancy, existence of fire hazards and adequacy and location of exits, fire escapes and private fire equipment.
  • Studies various subjects to enhance awareness and knowledge of firefighting methods and techniques including fire suppression, rescue and vehicle extrication, hydraulics, fire science, chemistry and hazardous materials, building construction, fire ground strategy and tactics, firefighter safety and incident command.
  • Attends training session and demonstrations of firefighting methods, equipment operations, street hydrants and other water supply locations; participates in physical fitness activities to maintain health, strength and endurance.
  • Assist in completing necessary reports and records regarding each alarm response stating the facts of what occurred, the actions taken, outcomes and complete patient information; informs next shift of any pertinent information regarding the department operations or emergency procedures.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications:   

Educational Requirements:  High School Diploma or GED

License, certifications, etc: 
1) State of Kansas EMT, AEMT, or MICT;   
2) State of Kansas valid Driver’s License;   
3) current CPAT;  
4) Firefighter 1

Physical Requirements of Position:

  • Climbing. Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.
  • Balancing. Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling and walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Stooping. Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Kneeling. Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Crouching. Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Crawling. Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Pushing. Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Pulling. Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Lifting. Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Operation and maintenance of various types of apparatus used by the fire department.
  • Work from ladder, heights and in close quarters while wearing protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Read and understand departmental policies, rules, regulations and written material in the field of firefighting, to learn firefighting evolutions, techniques and methods and to apply such information to specific work situations.
  • Very heavy work. Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes.
  • The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operates machines, such as lathes, drill presses, power saws, and mills where the seeing job is at or within arm's reach; performs mechanical or skilled trade’s tasks of a non-repetitive nature, such as carpenter, technicians, service people, plumbers, painters, mechanics, etc.

Testing/Screening Requested:

Employee will go through a testing process that will include a physical agility test, and a written test to determine compatibility with the Fire Service. These competencies should already be completed through a certified CPAT process.

  • The employee is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.
