PAY GRADE (11) : $14.09 hr / $29307.20 annually to $20.59 hr / $4282.20 annually
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION: Under general direction, assists in planning, directing,
and supervising the maintenance of a golf course and related facilities. Work varies, requires determining a sequence of operations and interpretive judgment within prescribed standards and procedures.
MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY AND PERFORMANCE:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES ARE: Assists the Golf Course Superintendent in planning, directing, supervising and participating in the maintenance and construction of fairways, greens, traps, water systems, waterways, and other golf course grounds; trains workers; constructs and maintains cart paths and tee boxes; maintains and performs repairs to golf course accessory buildings; inspects all facilities to determine effectiveness of programs and personnel; cuts cups; moves tees; operates mowers, carts and tractors; applies fungicides, pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers; repairs and schedules automatic irrigation systems; assists in estimating and substantiating department budgetary requirements; participates in repairs needed to maintain equipment in proper operating order; determines strength and mixture of fertilizers and chemicals used on a golf course; prepares golf course maintenance records;
OTHER DUTIES INCLUDE: performs carpentry work such as building benches and shelves; opens and closes the shop; performs other duties as assigned. Posts prepared data; supervises and uses equipment and materials requiring care to assure against breakdown or deterioration; position requires substantial contact with public and fellow employees; position requires employee to perform heavy physical work; hazards are moderate requiring care and use of proper safety equipment and procedures to prevent injury.
SUPERVISION ‑ RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS: Supervises a small group of
workers in the maintenance of a golf course, including regular employees and pre‑release inmates.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Any combination of
education and experience equivalent to an Associate Degree in Agronomy or a field in turf management, plus two years of progressively responsible experience in golf course and greens maintenance; must have or acquire a EPA Pesticide Applicator's Permit within one year of employment;

Maintains and applies current knowledge of fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides;
Possesses, maintains and applies a current working knowledge of the methods, equipment, materials, plants and tools used in grounds operations, maintenance and landscaping;
Working knowledge of the theory, care, and operation of internal combustion engines and mowing equipment.;
Maintains and applies current knowledge of the maintenance of automotive equipment; properly and efficiently repairs and maintains assigned equipment;
Is able to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications;
Effectively and efficiently plans, supervises, schedules, coordinates and reviews the work of semi‑skilled employees;
Develops work programs and evaluates the effectiveness of personnel and programs effectively and efficiently;
Properly maintains inventory of equipment and supplies;
Maintains records in an orderly and efficient manner;
Ability to perform heavy physical work and to lift over 100 pounds and to occasionally lift and carry over 100 pounds;
Ability to stand, walk, sit, ride, climb, bend, crawl, kneel, twist, grasp, reach, push, pull and perform similar body movements;
Possesses hand/eye/foot coordination adequate to operate large mowers, tractors and similar equipment, and operate a vehicle;
Ability to talk and hear in person, by telephone and two‑way radio and to hear equipment operating and malfunctioning; ability to see and read instructions, plans, work orders and similar documents;
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, superiors, players, and the public.
Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs mechanical defects/failures in various mowers and other mechanical equipment used in golf course grounds maintenance.
Spot checks equipment for performance on the course frequently and makes emergency repairs to equipment on the course.
Ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate maintenance work.
Skill in the use of a variety of equipment repair tools, and the making of various types of mechanical repair.
Services or supervises servicing of equipment prior to use.
Instructs and/or trains golf course maintenance workers regarding preventative maintenance, and the proper cleaning of and safe operation of equipment.
