Job Title: Light Equipment Operator I
Salary: $13.36 Hourly
Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Road Supervisor, the Light Equipment Operator I performs semi-skilled to skilled work in operation different types of construction and maintenance equipment. The employee in this position operates a variety of light equipment requiring some degree of skill in performing a variety of job assignments. This employee performs tasks related to road and bridge maintenance and construction.
Examples of Work (Essential Functions):
- Operates light equipment such as a mower, roller, tractor, backhoe, chain saw and other light equipment;
- Spreads gravel, sand, rock and asphalt;
- Patches road and bridge surfaces using cold or hot mix;
- Performs bridge maintenance work such as mowing road ditches, installing and maintaining culverts and filling washouts
- Rebuilds roads and bridges;
- Performs light maintenance and servicing of work in connection with the operations of related equipment;
- Performs unskilled manual work as assigned;
- Repairs and replaces wood, concrete and steel decks;
- Replaces structural steel, back walls, guardrails and nail ties;
- Constructs footings, piers and wings;
- Cleans and paints structures;
- Other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.
Experience: One to three years of road and bridge maintenance and light equipment operator experience is required. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information to perform the job reasonably well after six months in the position.
Education: High school diploma or GED is required. Requires a CDL driver’s license.
Skills: Knowledge of equipment maintenance. Thorough knowledge of safety operations or equipment. The ability to operator a truck, roller, loader and other related equipment.
Problem Solving: Limited problem solving exists in this position.
Decision Making: Limited decision making exists in this position.
Accountability: Employee is not responsible for budgetary control of the department and does not participate in the annual department budget process.
Supervision: Supervision is provided and job related decisions are reviewed by the road or bridge foremen. Employee does not have supervisory responsibility over subordinate personnel.
Personal Relations: Occasional contact with other county department and frequent contract with the general public.
Working Conditions: Manual labor and heavy lifting is required. Weather conditions are a factor in this position.
Physical Requirements: Heavy physical labor in exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. 90% of the time physical activity in lifting, bending, climbing, pushing and sitting while working with equipment at construction sites is required. The ability to use arms and hands to operate controls on equipment. However, there may be some walking, standing, stooping, and carrying of moderate to heavy items. Employee may be required to lift up to 100 lbs.
