Job Title:               As Needed Museum Assistant - Up to 3 positions available to maintain full roste

Reports to:            Museum Director/Curator

Pay Grade:            As Needed/Temp (Step 3)   Status:  As Needed

FLSA Status:         Non-Exempt

Position Summary:  To assist with attendant and clerical duties of the Museum


Essential Functions:

  • Greet, supervise, and provide information as needed to visitors.
  • Assist in maintaining the appearance and contents of the Museum, and other Museum educational program locations.
  • Accession objects as needed.
  • Complete clerical and miscellaneous work as assigned.
  • Open and close the Museum and supervise its operation as needed.

Secondary Functions:     Assist with the disaster preparedness/security/emergency plan for the Museum.


Position Requirements: 

Education:   High school diploma required.  College degree in history, museum studies, or related field is desirable.


Experience:  Knowledge of a body of standardized rules, procedures or operations requiring considerable training and experience to perform the full range of standard clerical assignments and resolve reoccurring problems.  Knowledge of Riley County history or a background in museums/library is preferred.


Skills:            Must have computer knowledge.  Must be able to communicate effectively and speak publicly.


Supervisory Control:  The employee uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently without specific instructions, but refers deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations not covered by instructions to the supervisor for decision or help.


Supervisory Responsibility:  None


Guidelines:  Procedures for doing the work have been established and a number of specific guidelines are available.


Complexity:  The decision regarding what needs to be done involves various choices requiring the employee to recognize the existence of and differences among a few easily recognizable situations.


Scope & Effect of Work:  The work involves the execution of specific rules, regulations, or procedures and typically comprises a complete segment of an assignment or project or broader scope.


Personal Contacts:  The contacts are with members of the general public, as individuals or groups, and one or more of the parties may be uninformed concerning the role and authority of other participants.


Purpose of Contacts:  The purpose is to obtain, clarify, or give facts or information regardless of the nature of those facts, i.e., the facts or information may range from easily understood to highly technical.
